keeping dogs in kennels

hi guys.

im thinking of getting a terrier pup (border x jr).she will be 8 weeks old and i was just wondering at what age they can go into an outside kennel,she will be in the kennel on her own.

if its put outside on its own to early can it cause the pup to cry when left.

i've had a whippet which suffered from seperation anxiety and dont want the terrier to be the same

 

and what is the minimum requirments for the kennel eg size,wood/brick,heating etc etc

 

all help will be much appreciated and sorry if it seems like a stupid question but all the dogs ive had have always been kept indoors so just want to make sure i do things right.

Alright mate all my dog are in outdoor kennels i just make sure all mine have a dry draft proof area to sleep as for the age they will cry for the first night or two until they get used to there new surroundings i like to socialise them with the other dog as soon as i can as this can help them settle in.I am no expert but i hope this helps all the best..

Personally id keep it in the house for a month or so do i little bonding,then gradually enter to the kennel through the day when your in,so if theres any noise no1 can complain because there not in bed! He will soon get used to it drop some of your old trainers in maybe a top for your smell,nice warm bed,heat lam,personally a wooded kennel,most important a big fecking padlock to keep the theifs out!

dont make a rod for your back if its going outside put it out

start as you mean to go on. put it outside straightaway. if its come from a warm house then a heat lamp for the cold nights. Make sure its socialised well with other dogs and people so it doesnt grow up nervous. make sure it has stuff to do in the kennel (toys you hide treats in help pass the time for a pup) and make sure it comes out in the day for a few hours bonding with you.

I know most people do put them straight out in kennel but i like to bond etc at 1st everyone different!

As long as its dry and out the draft it will be ok but it will still winge for a couple of days like they all do when in different surroundings

Herts Hunter it's a dog! treat it like a dog and not like a child and you won't have any anxiety problems. As long as its got somewhere dry to kip and a decent bit of bedding it'll be sound.

 

It's up to you though.

Good advise, dogs are dogs and should be treated no different. Its when they are treated different that you get the problems 99% of the time.

Personally i keep um in til there 6 months old,to get um well socialised etc. Each to there own
