Squirrel_Basher 17,102
Had a look out Tuesday at a spot that borders a chicken farm i do and was surprised to see not one but 4 foxes here .The first one didnt want to know a squeak and i bipassed him ,hoping to come back around and stalk it .The next i saw was way out on a rape field .I got into what i thought was a good position under a wall and set the bipod for a sqeaking session. On the first go this fox came belting in .I had the green filter on the rifle lamp ,or rather a piece of green see through plastic ,the idea of my good mate Martin off the site but this has its draw backs as i was to find out .Eyes stand out brilliantly with the green but its a job to make out the body at range .Fox came to within 90 yards and i looked at him for a while ,trying to make out what was what .The glare from the eyes seemed to blur out the body as he was face on and i mean really blur it .I tried another squeak ,gentler this time and he came forward to about 60 but another look revealed it was worse not better. Those eyes were like dinner plates in that green light . I put the cross hairs where i thought the head, neck met and squeezed one off only to see a spray of mud and rape fly up from below him . Well ,i cussed for a while and watched the fox zig zag across the field like he had a thousand lurchers on his arse .I was in no doubt that the green filter allowed me to squeak him in but the end result wasnt what i expected .Peeled it off for a look with the white light .Next field held 9 roe which wernt bothered by me at all but that will change in day im sure .Walked to the far boundary before i saw anything else and a pair of foxes came belting through a hedge to another squeak but did what a lot do this time of year and sat up about 150 yards out .Try as i could but they wouldnt budge for a squeak ,instead happy to glance at each other for reassurance ,just to be there i suspect .I stalked in to a nice range and set up for one of them ,an obvious dog fox by his size and shot him at 123 paces on a flat field with a good bank as backstop .Well that nearly made up for the earlier disaster ,nearly .Around the far side of this permission is a quarry where i ambushed a trio of roe earlier and i was pleased to see 4 more in the area as well as a good head of rabbits ,sdaly missing on most of my land .I was day dreaming really as i wandered back to the truck and suddenly found myself on the deck with one hell of a pain in my right ankle that nearly made me sick . The rifle ,still loaded ,which i carry in the military position ,had gone across a tractor wheel rut and my face was up against the action . Something had definately clicked in both my ankle and the rifle set up .Swiching the lamp on i could see the lamp mounting had snapped off the scope and the bolt was buried in the ground but that was my least worry . My ankle was on fire and didnt want to move in case anything else hurt .For maybe 15 minutes i lead face down and thought about my predicament .My phone was in my pocket but a glance at that revealed no fecking signal Eventually i tried to move the foot and got to a kneeling position, unloaded the rifle and found the bipod had also come loose ,with both it and the sling dangling on the floor .Christ what a feck up .Struggled to my feet despite a bit of shakiness and wrapped the sling and harris around the rifle .I did think about using the rifle as a crutch but after sitting down for another 30 minutes the pain subsided to an ache and i decide to get back to the truck and get home .That walk took me another hour ,one which i normally do in 10 minutes ,but i arrived at the truck and managed to drive home in a bit of pain i can tell you .It was 1.20 am when i pulled on the drive but luckily my wife was still awake and we ageed i should get it checked out .Woke the daughter to explain this and off we went to our nearest casualty .How pissed off were we when we read the notice saying they open from 7am to 1 am and were now shut .Back to our house and managed to get my wellies off and christ what a a size my ankle was ,about the size of a tennis ball and going purple .Stayed wake and went back down to the hospital at 7am where the nurse said she was almost certain it was broke and that i needed an x-ray and to come back at 9am when that opened Now im a patient man but it was starting to get to me a tad but i decided to stay .X-ray opened bang on 9 and in i went on crutches expecting the worse.I had a glance at the result and knew straight away that no real damage was done which was a big weight off the shoulder what with all those deer still to cull and that . Anyway ,spend xmas eve ,xmas day and boxing day on crutches but tonight i am doing without them .Lucky really . Quote Link to post
