Sterry 0
I've been lookin for an almost exclusive fox rifle (not at massive range sub 200 yrds) and although i think i'll be gettin a .223 down to the price and availability of ammo (not want to reload as of yet). i desperatly want to know what the 22 hornet is like. Any veiws?...on paper its a great calibre, but this is a real world unfortunatly. Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
It would be a great Mid range calibre if the Ammunition manufacturers thought the same way and produced a range of Ammo that was easily available. The Hornet is a deadly calibre if the range is kept sensible. It is also a fairly quiet calibre when Moderated. But unfortunately, it is a dying round. The Guns and the Ammo are becoming more scarce apart from reloading. SS Quote Link to post
Squirrel_Basher 17,102
From real experience -I grew up with one of these babies and i loved it .Looking back i probably stretched the limits a bit but when your young thats what limits are for arnt they .Very accurate out to 150 yds but the tail off is very noticeable from there on .Shot a lot of foxes and sometimes wonder why i swapped it in for a .222 but the price of ammo and availabilty is enough to reassure me .If you want a rifle PURELY for fox at sensible range then get one ,providing the ammo is available . SNAP SHOT 194
the hornet is a great calibre as said, but in the future the round is being phased out due to poor demand, which means the manufactures will stop producing the rounds, this will be done over a period of time, just when we don't know for sure, if your planning on learning to shoot foxy and this will be a first then there is nothing better to cut your teeth on..... i suggest you look at a .223, but thats just me..........good luck Quote Link to post
Sterry 0
is their much in the way of performance between a 22 hornet and .223 under 200 yrds, i was only abit unsure of the .223 being bit too over the top for the range i want it for. and the 22 hornet seems bit better (no mincing) rabbits. SNAP SHOT 194
.22 hornet on a rabbit will still make a mess, alot more power in the .223 but you could always head shot them......plus i thought it was an exclusive fox gun or almost, plus if you build up theexperience the .223 will go beyond the 200 no problem...... Sterry 0
Well ALMOST EXCLUSISE fox, i'll think i'll make it it exclusively for charlie in that case. The reason i wanted sommit for sub 200yrds is for my experience im fairly new to this game, so dont want nothing too much for the shooter. definatly looks like the .223 is the ticket, cheers. SNAP SHOT 194
practice is the key to knowing any firearm, limit your shooting until you can call the shots, for instance, place a target at 100 yards and practice until you can confidently shoot within a certain size group, say 1 1/2 inches then the same at 200 say 2 1/2 to 3 inches you will soon gain confidence when you can do this then move to live quarry at say within 100 to 150 to start off.......good luck Quote Link to post
Sterry 0
Cheers Snapshot, i always do some degree of practice before moving to live stuff, would i have to state this on my license as practice or something??? Quote Link to post
Guest JohnGalway
I agree with SS, build confidence in whatever rifle calibre you pick by picking your shots. Walk before you run with the range Quote Link to post

Hi Sterry, i use a .22 hornet for fox, can,t fault it stops charlie out to about 200yds no probs (which i think is max distance for night shooting ) i reload using 10.5grain of Vit N110 powder with a 40grain V max bullet gives approx 2850 ft /sec , not to be underestimated enough to stop any fox in it,s tracks.also the hornet can be moderated very well, and has no recoil to speak of, imo excellent calibre for use in areas where range is limited to 150 / 200yds if possible try before you buy Quote Link to post
Mr_Logic 5
Most of what I would say has been said. But, 223 or hornet produce edible rabbits with head shots. Quote Link to post
