Sunday morning stalk

Recommended Posts

First light Sunday i was up and out at a place i like to do often as the farmer is always moaning about something whether it be deer ,foxes or rats . I studied the wind for a bit and found it was ideal in that i would be into the wind when i approached the places that hold most often .Bumped a doe unexpectedly in a ditch as i was watching a buzzard nearby and not paying the right amount of attention forward .Never mind as theres plenty here as a rule .Up around the top of the ground i could see where a dog walker had beat me to it as there were fresh footprints and a steaming dog turd  Followed the prints and saw an elderly women with an old black lab ,fair play to her i say for being up and about at this time ,a rare occurance in peoples everyday lives i find and good job too .Anyway ,as i approached the right hand side of the ground ,i stalked slower as its easy to miss a deer or a small group ,here ,as they like the deep ditch and the cover it affords .Sure enough ,there along the ditch top was a flicking pair of ears and no antler buds ,a good sign i thought :clapper:

The stalk took me around an 'L' shaped field so i was well out of sight of the couched deer .Suddenly there was a double shot from a shot gun from near the farm followed by two more from a stack of bales behind me .I knew i wasnt the only one on this ground but i am the only one with a rifle .Two deer disturbed by the shots at the farm came hammering straight towards me and i could of head shot one if id been that way inclined but i was content to watch them straight line for a gateway behind me .For a moment i wondered if they were anything to do with what i was stalking and so i was relieved when i got to glass again and spot the deer in the same couch .The end stalk was on my belly along a thin hedge to arrive at 90 degrees to the deer .Bipod out and shot the deer in the head from maybe 90yards ,no more .Slung the doe on my shoulder and made back to the farm to be greeted by the two shotgunners who it turned out, were Polish .They asked if they could have the deer ,cheeky b*****ds ,but i cracked a joke about the recession and moved on .
