bigphil 0
Im after breaking my staffy to my ferrets. Although he aint no lurcher i love taking him out ferreting with me but i always keep him on a lead. We was out the other day and what i do is i stick him to the side a he stays but he crys like mad he wants abit of the ation lol. Hes pretty quick too, A rabit bolted from a hole with no net, put it this way when i shouted for him to get it he turned it twice before it made its way back down a different warren (lucky bugger). So we went to the warren that it went down, we didnt net up because we thought that it would'ent bolt with it being chased 15 mins before but the bugger did again, and again he nearly had it but it got away through a stone wall. Anyway what i am getting at is has anyone got any good tips on how to break your dog to ferrets and also ferrets to dog because i have put the ferrets to him before and they go to bite him not the other way round. Thanks in advance. Edited December 15, 2008 by bigphil Quote Link to post
stubby 175
I'll leave the others to give advice on introducing ferts to dogs, but my advice, loose the text talk, one is one, not 1 and two is two, not 2, if you get my drift, hit spell check button before posting something, it will show up, just in case people type without thinking about it, Quote Link to post

olliedakennard 0
Lol, my first bit of advice would be too show the dog the ferrets out of the cage but when he is a safe distance away and tell him NO or leave it if he goes for it then a quick tap on the nose should sort it. If it does not work at first leave it for a couple of days and try again. I trained my bull greyhound this way.... Quote Link to post
undisputed 1,664
Its always trickier when the dogs an adult....should be done as a pup...Anyways depending on how well you know your dog let it sniff the ferret while your holding it discourage any aggression ....have the dog on the lead and let the ferret wander about again discourage any interest the dog has do this for a bit and there should be no probs but if the dog has had a go or killed one before it's nigh impossible to break the habit...good luck! whin 463
broke greyhounds to ferrets fully grown lurchers ,, i just let them see me handle them let them smell them and a sharp row if they try for them i keep doing it until it sinks in , terreirs are a diffrent matter my patts sw ferrets but had killed a few and well the odgs were never a hundred percent but bitch was more biddable , all to do with your dog knowing what he is aloud to catch and not , Quote Link to post
fireman 11,456
I'd have the hutch down low so each can see each other on a rgular basis, even be able to sniff each other through the wire. This needs keeping an eye on in case the dog gets a bit excited,if he does rebuff him hard :realmad: .Next step would be to introduce them to each other,do this whilst handling the ferrets as the dog would be less inclined to bite with it in your hands. If the ferrets try to bite your dog then try to give them a distraction like a little milk in a dish,if you have good control over your dog the ferrets biteing the dog will be your biggest problem and this will take time to over come but can be done most of the time. You may have to keep going back to square one with your breaking but time and patients will see you through.Although when they are both out in the field they will both be in hunting mode and accidents in the heat of the moment do happen,be very sure of them with each other before hunting them loose together.Good luck and with work the results are worth it mate.
