Strong Stuff 2,171
How much road work should. you do weekly as in time/miles?? jogging/walking?? with a 9 month old whippet to get it fit and ready to start a little work when its about 11-12 months....... I'd have said there's no hard rule, as much as it needs. I do about 10 - 12 hours a week roadwork with my 9 month old Bull X and Stafford, seems enough to keep them happy, and gives me time with them. But then I'm a fat git who needs the exercise!!! sandymere 8,263
I've a 9 month bull cross, 23" to the shoulder, building up to about 30 minutes of coming along on my run 3 or 4 times a week with a mile road at the begining and end off the session and free running, on beach or grassland, for the rest. He gallops/plays on the other nights and each morning and seems to be progressing nicely so hope to give a couple of easy runs after Xmas on the lamp. A human jog is about the same as a canine trot and a good way to build up cardiovasculer fitness while the free running/playing give excelleration/speed mixed with turning to fine tune the biomechanics and fast paced stuff. lawrence 657
i wouldn't over do the road work at that age, a few mile a day would do, don't neglect the free running, make yourself a flirtpole, your whippet will love it and its probably one of the best conditioning tools there is. ljs1984 3
whats a flirt pole?
artic 595
It's is a long pole with a lure attached to one end. The lure can be a raggy, toy or anything the dog will chase. Moving the pole back/forth, changing directions with the lure close to the floor. It builds co-ordination, speed and alertness. Some just use a broom stick!
