wild rover 548
Decided to set out and do a bit of ferreting yesterday with the dogs, we got to the vegetable fields, where we normally go ferreting only to find that the river had burst its banks and flooded most of the fields where the bunnys are! Absolutely gutted so We let the dogs off for a bit of exercise until we got near our next permission, as we got there my dog bolted a rabbit and chased it across the field and just missed it Climbed over the gate into the next field and we spotted a really big rabbit up the top of the field, both dogs spotted it aswell, before we could set one of the dogs off my mates dog had already started the chase! Anyway he missed it through the fence so we decided we werent having a very good day and decided to drive somewhere else where there were more rabbits! As we got there my mates dog started slowing up his pace of walking, as we got to the van I said to me mate he doesnt look to good and my mate replied saying naa he is just an hypochondriach As I was sorting my dog out I looked at his dog and he looked like he was drunk, I walked over to him patted him on his back and he collapsed! I immediately picked him up and all four of his legs spread wide opened he fell to the floor and started shaking violently like he was having a fit! I carried him into the back of the van he stood up in a locked position with his head down, he just wouldnt move at all and he started making very bad whimpering noises. As we were getting the gear in the van I quickly took a photo of his condition so that I could show the vet as we didnt think he was going to make it. He stood in this position for about 7 minutes totally not moving, we tried to get him to lie down because of the journey in the van to get to the vets then all of a sudden he just collapsed. I thought he was dead, we jumped into the van and he was still breathing, his eyes were wide open but there was no response from him. Here is a pic of him standing up in the locked position All the way to the vet he was in a limp position having muscle spasms me and my mate were scared sh*tless as we thought has he broke his back? or has he been poisoned? we just didnt know what to think. Anyway we got to the vets, the vet examined him and he wasnt too sure what he thought it was but his suspicion was either he had been poisoned or he had some scientific muscle disorder, he did say the name of it but I cant remember! Anyway he sent him off to another vet which is more specialised in this and they kept him in and put him on a drip and took blood tests! Then 7 oclock last night the vet phoned my mate and told him to come and pick up the dog he is jumping around here like a kangaroo! The vet said that the problem was that his blood sugar was dangerously low and that they had got his sugar level back up and he was right as rain as if nothing had happened So I thought I would share this with you so that you can recognise the symptoms in case you ever experience this for yourself! Heres 2 pics 10-15 mins before it happened hes the 1 with all the dark brown his name is diesel. Looks fit as a fiddle! Hi Mate when I used to do a heavy nights lamping I used to make up an electrolyte solution, melt sugar in warm water, some dogs burn off that much energy, the symptoms your dog show are typical, some dogs suffer sooner than others, fitness can be a factor as well, give the dog a drink of the cooled solution every so often, during the day I also give a mars bar if the dog looks like it needs something. Don't run it on empty, a handful of food an hour before going out, hope this helps. Quote Link to post

Guest MY LAW
you got so much of the pic right but not the whole scene, and one thing you should do i ask questions to the right people.you are like i was when i was in my last years in school ,i did not want to listen to others with a bit more knowledg than me ,and to look good because i did not want to learn i keept on taking the piss out of the teachers so i would look good in front of every one in my class, and when i left school i was probibly the dullest in my class ,so i had to start again only this time it was with some thing i liked doing [working lurchers] back to the pics ,yes the fields was sprayed a long time ago i agree, it is what i based my conclusion on when i pmd the owner ,i just pointed out that they had been sprayed with ?? [i will leave that to you to find out as i all ready know] from having this happen to 3 diferent dogs 1 of which belongd to me ,all i will add is, this substance acts very similar to be being bitten by a poisionious snake it makes you feel unwell and atacks the nervous system and the the muscles ,and causes shaking ,only difference is it was waterd down because it came back out of the soil after it had been raining [have a look and see]so it was not strong enough to make the dog sick after it drank from a puddle in the field[which it DID and the other dog DID NOT] but to give the other reactions a while later when it got into the dogs system .[now for some more advice that you might or might not know and it is to benefit your dog rather than you ]DONT let your dog drink out of gate ways in fields ,because a tractor spills what ever it is using on the fields ,in them when it stops for the farmer to open and close the gate , only when your shuting or opening the gate your dog grabs a drink without you noticing it doing so ,.keep up your childish behavior it is benifiting others.
