Back Stabbath 1
I'm getting a lurcher or greyhound, but is it possible to have a good working dog with a cat?
lurchergrrl 1,441
If you raise the pup with the cat, then yes. But odds are only your cat will be safe, and any it sees out and about will be fair game. If you're bringing an adult dog in, you can pretty much count on being catless. Back Stabbath 1
Damn. I'm getting an adult dog, but you know the way some greyhounds are cat friendly, I was hoping it would know the difference between a rabbit and a cat! I don't give a f*ck about anyone elses cat, theres too many of the buggers around anyway, its just we have had our mad deaf cat for about 14 years! He might be on his last legs though. Back Stabbath 1
I'd get one handy enough, I was just wondering about the cat situation.
lurchergrrl 1,441
I've got a second hand Grey BS - she came to me at about 14 months. She'd been "cat tested" and passed. Then she came here and nearly killed one of my own cats, and got one in a park full of kids on another occassion. It can work out, don't get me wrong. But it's bloody hard work and you could find yourself minus a cat despite your best efforts. You should always try to expose the dog to cats before brining it in, assess it's body language and reaction, and try to work out the dogs potential for being trained not to chase the cat. There are plenty of rescue greys who live with cats, but you really have to be careful with it all.
Back Stabbath 1
Yeah. Well my own Doberman can't go near the cat anyway and he's lived with him since he was 9 wks old, he nudges him, bats him with his paws and wants to pull all the fur out of him (he's got a thing about furry things, tried to savagly kill my sheepskin once!). So the dog stays in the kitchen and the back yard and the cat goes around the rest of the place. So it might not be too much of a problem if its not cat friendly, just keep them seperate. Wish you luck with it. I thought the same thing about keeping them separate, and have found myself forever on edge when the cat is in the vicinity - and even then accidents happen. I rehomed two of my young cats, and the other one has survived two attacks so far. So now my grey spends a lot of time with her muzzle on.
Back Stabbath 1
Cheers mate. Might end up getting a pup, its just I wanted an adult because you know the temperment already and if its not a good worker you can sell it on without too much attatchment. Also there are plenty of greys in pounds here so I thought it would be good to rescue one. Edited October 26, 2008 by Back Stabbath
Chaz 6
If you are after a greyhound, contact chaz from the forum................ Cheers for that Simoman and it just so happens that I have a few retired greyhounds looking for good permanent homes here is a small selection of what we have on offer As for the question of the cat it is entirely possible to re-train greyhounds to live with cats it just takes patience and time I am not saying ALL dogs will be okay with cats but a large proportion will be just make sure you have a good strong box muzzle and plenty of patience and time and most will come good A very hard chasing bitch with over 100 races to her credit that went home to live with her owner she lives with a couple of cats and her mate the Hamster And a pic off the net showing how well greys and cats can get along
Simoman 110
Nice pics chaz I hate hamsters though, they always bite me
Back Stabbath 1
Haha, the hamster pic is so cute! I'd love to get a blue one. In fairness though I'm hardly going to get one from England when theres so many unwanted ones here that we're sending them over to you's! Thats good to know that most of them can be trained though, I'd say it would be easier than trying to train my Murdock to the cat. Just my luck I got one with the lights on, but nobody home. Mine DEFINATELY cannot be trained to live with a cat.
