artic 595
No mate, at the end of the day you have answered your own question! What you put in is what you get out. I owned a dog that both parents never worked, and the pup grew to become a good pot filler. I had him for 9 years before i retired him working. What ground will you be working the pup on? The only thing i will say to you is, bond with the pup, be patient and enjoy him. Quote Link to post
Guest tewkesferreter
large open fields and quite steep hilly ground mate, dya reckon being a novice i should of gone with a dog thats parents are proven workers? Quote Link to post
hagar 5
If you start by rolling a ball for him to fetch it ll encourage his prey drive, and as he gets about 6 months let him see a worker in action a few times but keep him on lead till he shows willing then let him have a chase, if you are lucky he ll pick it up Quote Link to post
Guest hpool_hunter
1st of all , DONT beat yourself up , as your not the 1st to be duped , and wont be the last , people will say anything , and i mean anything to sell dogs , from wrong age , to been world beaters or even wrong breed, its a chance everyone of us will take sometime when getting into dogs , may it be terriers or lurchers , but you deal . and you work with it , secondly as everyone as stated , doesnt need to be working parents , just helps , just do as you would with working parents , no different . as its what you put into it that matters , good luck with your new pup HH Quote Link to post
artic 595
It does help, but like i said i've had a dog with non working parents that turned out a goodun. Take your time mate, and with the right training everything SHOULD click into place. Quote Link to post
Guest tewkesferreter
hes already chasing balls in the house that i throw for him and somtimes brings em back, ive also got a 12mth terrier that hes non stop aggravating and usually seems to get the better of. Quote Link to post
Guest hpool_hunter
end of day mate , a pup - 8 weeks old - you have the next 12 months maybe longer before you need to start worrying about what it may and may not do , let it be a pup , and reap the benefits next season , all best HH Quote Link to post
BULL 100
as already said what you put in you get out it is nice to know exactly how your dogs bred and what the parents achieved if anything ,worker to worker is always favored but you cant guarantee the pups would work.in the breeding of your dog there is a great deal of sight hound which instinctively give chase, also the added bonus of a collie in the mix which adds to the ease of training the pup as they are usually quick learners and eager to please . keep at it and the pup will do you proud. JollyPoacher 3
Sadly I dont think the dog will work out, not having working parents etc...... I will take it off your hands for free. Dont be daft a racing greyhound xllie greyhounndxsaluki will have no problem picking up this game, just because the parents weren't worked it doesn't mean they wouldn't have been excellent. Its in the genes, working ancestory doesn't impart knowledge to pups but a proven dog will pass the genetic characteristics that have enabled it to become a good worker. No doubt the pup will be a cracker and in 2 years time I will read a thread about the pupbe linked to caspar or dancer... Get some pics ups Good luck JP Quote Link to post
