undisputed 1,664
JUST AFTER YOUR THOUGHTS. I WAS TALKING TO A MATE AND HE WAS SAYING THAT WHILE OUT WITH MATES THE OTHER DAY THEY RECKONED AND AGREED THAT GOOD CONSISTENT RELIABLE WORKING TERRIERS,OF ALL BREEDS,ARE GETTING HARDER TO COME BY.DAY BY DAY WAS THE QUOTE. NOW MY OPINION WAS THAT WITH SO MANY QUITERS IT WAS LACK OF EXPERIENCE OR A MACHO MENTALITY PUSHING EM TOO HARD ,EXPECTING TOO MUCH ETC ETC. SURELY THE AMOUNT OF DOGS NOT MAKING THE GRADE CAN T BE DOWN TO BAD TERRIERMEN?AND UNFORTUNATELY IM TENDING TO SIDE WITH MY MATES OPINION. PS.THE LADS TALKING ABOUT THIS HAVE BEEN IN DOGS FOR WELL OVER 20 YEARS EACH AND KNOW WHAT THEY RE ON ABOUT. WHAT DO YOUS RECKON?IS THIS THE BEGINNING OF THE END? Well Ally McCleod was in football for over 30yrs and said scotland could win the world cup! Edited September 6, 2008 by undisputed Quote Link to post
Guest SPIFF
i know were your coming from spiff but as the new comes in some of the old go out and 2years ago we had a litter of 2 dogs 2 bitches out of that four only one bitch made the standard required so two years spent on the other 3 was a waste of time in some peple s eye s but not ours as we now have a top bitch who hopefully will keep going strong and can be bred from if we had sold the 2 bitches and kept the dogs we would have nothing too show so as i said to have a good standard of terrier it takes hard work effort and a few pound but most of all detemination as some years you could end up with nothing for your effort s but if you keep aiming for the bullseye you will eventually hit it ps at present between old dogs and young dogs who have been dug me and my mate have 6 digging dogs a few ready to start and 5 young dogs in around the 17 week old bracket still think it pays to rear your pups every year as disaster is only one dig away at any time . i know yous keep them well worked and tested Dee but im just talking in general for most people nowadays. And im staying in with you anyway love for the future, just in case  Quote Link to post

I agree with most of what you are saying, BUT I do think it is better letting trusted digging lads have some of the pups as I find if lads have only one young terrier to bring on, they put a lot more time and effort into that one, plus it is always there for those easy places, instead of routating which young one goes out. I like to have a few terriers that get a lot of work rather than a lot of terriers that get a bit of work. I'm not saying your way is wrong, just saying what I do. Its also good to get some of the new lads in the game going in the right direction, a risk yes but if they and the pups come right, a job well worth a pup. THAT WOULD BE MY THINKING EXACTLY SMELLYDOG,ALTHOUGH DEE AND HIS MATES DO A LOT OF WORK WITH THE DOGS.I ONLY KEEP WHAT I CAN TEST REASONABLY. Quote Link to post
sniper 30
I reckon that a good honest Earth dogs are very hard to come by. yes theres alot of show and pet blood about at the minute but as p***y said there are some very top class workers around that are kept slim between mates as it should stay in my opinion. also alot of well bred earth stuff spew it aswel wich can be down to how some people bring dogs on. some self enter to young. some just do not like getting twated by the red vulpine bu if you can get a good Earth dog these days you have a good dog that should be tested to its full potential. Imho. cheers All... Sniper Quote Link to post
swanseajack 228
. some just do not like getting twated by the red vulpine Sniper made me laugh... A lot of shit is bred by wannabee's, a lot of shit is passed on as 'working' by the money mongers to wannabees, who say this dog is out of so and so breeding, then they breed this non working shit passing it of because of the names in the lines,,, good genuine terrier are NOT sold by good genuine Terriermen why would they ?????? I know this because I've personally witnessed it over the years, I know it because I witnessed it a few weeks ago, whereby a youngster travelled some miles to buy a working dog (|Russell type-Showy, couple of teeth missing) bought it for a fair few quid as well... I took one look at it said it's a cracking looking dog, why did the guy sell it.... then he told me 'the story' a lot of lies are told, by people trying to line their pockets... If people were true to themselves, about their terriers, their working abilities, then we wouldn't be in this situation.. If it's a half hearted 'worker' why put it over something that's good, your just diluting what was good... been said a million times on here, but it gets done every year, EVERY YEAR, Another example of what happened recently, a guy brought his bitch to a mate of mine to breed, told my mate it was a good worker, my mate said OK let's see it work... so they took it out... the bitch spewed first hole after 5 mins... mate puts his dog in, dug the quarry... When questioned, the guy said she does it 'sometimes' but she's out of good stuff, so the the pups should come good.... my mate told him to use her as backfill and f**k off, but I' damm sure he would have taken this bitch to someone else and there is possibly a litter on the way, out of workers !!! Funny old game !!!! Quote Link to post
sniper 30
completly agree with you Swansea Jack. if a terrier is worth its cop usually it aint gunna get passed on a decent terrierman would pass it between mates. Quote Link to post
