Lamping with a bedlington

i read somewhere (plummer maybe) belington cross whippets make good ferreting dogs n work rough cover well n that most dogs can lamp to varying degrees is this not correct then as i have no experience of beddys or the whippet cross but was considering a beddy whippet as a handy size mooching dog

Bedlington x whippet is excellent dog to have mate....excellent lamping dog, my old bitch was anyway. lol.

I dont see what is wrong in using the full range of ability in any breed as long as the breed itself is preserved as it is. I dont think they are wanting to change the bedlington, there would be no point when the beddy whippet is available.

I say go for it, if the dogs enjoy it then it is better for them and you than sitting at home just because you dont have a fit lurcher.

Let me end this now by saying Bedlingtons are not, have never been, and never will be lamping dogs.

I reckon mine is as quick as any, but I'd have starved by now if I relied on him catching me rabbits.

Theres nothing wrong with it if yours can do it. But if someone young or inexperienced was on here looking for a proper lamping dog and they read this post they might go out and buy a beddy and then there would be problems for dog and owner. and that would be bad.

As a owner and hunter of both plummers and a hancock lurcher mate i wouldn't listen to anyone,if you have fun who gives a toss what others say.I have great sport with my lot on all sorts of quarry so crack on mate,if it works why not use it and bollocks to the doubters.

i think its a credit to the bedlington if it can do a bit of lamping now and again.

 

It cant catch rabbits with any regularity, it's WAY to big at 18 1/2" for fox work... the only credit you can give the dogs is that they are not very good at anything in particular... or are they ???

if i was you swansea jack i would get your legendary thread going again and let this slur on the working bedlington disappear into obscurity. bedligton terriers are for killing foxes in undiggable earths and rock piles a unique a admirable set of credentials. how these people who set to tarnish the reputation even get hold of pups in the first place. get you 2005 thread back in action with quality tales a photographs.

i did'nt get a beddy to use for foxing it does'nt flick my switch! i dont really care what anyone says, if i want to lamp my beddy i will and its as simple as that! everyone is entitled to there own opinon, but some folk have to get abusive with it too!

You have every right to do what you want with your dog, that's your perogative... I'm not being abusive just asking a simple question, there is no credit for 'The Bedlington as a breed' if it's 18 1/2" tall and able to catch the odd rabbit.. yours seems to be a bit of an in between type of dog, tell me to go fly a kite if you like, but in my humble opinion if you wanted a dog for rabbits you would have been better of with a lurcher, a lurcher of bedlington origin if that's what flicks your switch.. there's a few too many beddy of the bushing 18"+ type coming on to the market over the last decade for anyone who has a genuine interest in 'real bedlingtons' to take any note of... then these untested and untried 'bedlingtons' are being put over greyhounds, whippets etc to produce 'lurchers' ... now that's a totally different thread that could be started if anyone wants to take it upon themselves..

I think its how you go about it nealy lad, you rub people up the wrong way, then the thread ends up a war zone.

and as for the lamping beddys well, what does it matter what you do with your dogs? aslong as you and the dogs enjoy it who gives a feck.

My pals beddy gets his mouth round afew during the day, short runs on rough ground and cover. is got a good nose and is fun to watch. He's never encouraged it, we use it to flush fox. but it doest me im gonna start slaggin him or his dog off on this site coz iv got nowt better to do!

I have just started taking my 'bedlington' out on the lamp. Shes not ped, probs 3/4 or 7/8th bedlington the rest not sure. I only lamp her to keep her fit really, she gets the odd one maybe 1-2 out of 10, would get more if she used her head abit. Goes in like a bull in a china shop lol. Dont mind though shes a ferreting dog.

People are arguing and being called abusive, but aint you all missing the point here, michael.hudson7 who started this thread put a picture up of what is supposed to be a bedlington right ? Now when I said surely thats not a beddy he says it is a pure beddy BUT its had whippet in the line some time back!! So he's not lamping with with a beddy but a beddy whippet, yeah ? Now say i'm wrong about the dog in the picture, no way is that a pure beddy, if it is mines a bloody sheep !!
