Barrel with mod

Recommended Posts

Well Paddy mate, if you shorten the barrel you may well find the accuracy may suffer a wee bit, and remember of course, you will have to re-crown the barrel again - this is a finnicky job in itself but if done correctly shouldn't have much of a problem.

Thats the main point I can think of, as regards affecting the rifle in its performance, like?

Two questions for ya:

1) How long is the barrel now (without the moderator), before you take anything off, so to speak?

2) How long would the barrel be say, after you lop some off (again, without the moderator on, i mean)?

3) (ok, i know i said 2, but what the hell! ) Do you know what the rate of twist is for your barrel, by any chance)? Cheers bud.

Regards,

Grim.

Thats why i asked because it would end up being the same length again wiith the barrel cut and mod taking its place.

i wouldn't have thought it would effect its performance (power ect..)

You'd be surprised mate! lol I am going to try to go a little way towards an explanation of what i mean - If anyone knows more about this particular subject than i, please feel free to step in! LOL

For example, lets say you got a barrel of 19 inches, and lets assume that once the pellet starts its movement up the barrel and at the end it leaves the confines of the barrel, it has twisted 2 1/2 times, yeah?

Ok, now you shorten that same barrel by (lets say) 6 inches, you then fire the same pellet brand up that barrel. But, when it leaves the barrel end it will have twisted 1 1/4 times (for the sake of example) . The main difference being that as the pellets twisting motion has been limited, you will find that its rate of twist (in flight) is slower than it was when it came out of the 19 inch barrel. Therefore, slower rate of twist will give you less accuracy than before, and this unfortunately, will not be able to be replaced by the addition of a moderator - moderators don't have rifling inside them, and the bore of a mod is usually somewhat larger than the calibre of the pellet, you see .

So although the general performance won't be affected much at all, the accuracy will suffer in the end. Thats why i would say don't shorten the barrel if you can possibly avoid it, like?

Hope this helps you bud?

Grim.

not only that if you cut the bartrel down to much on a pcp air rifle you will loss shots per charge to

what rifle is it on ? the best way to keep a pcp air rifle to a silent as poss and compact is to have the barrel screwcut

and a over barrel mod fitted

but to have a over barrel mod it depends what rifle you have really.

like a air arms s410 couldnt have on because of the barrel band. but a s10 or rapid could have one as long as it isnt to long because it would touch the buddy bottle
