the choice is down to you really mate I wouldnt leave her much longer my terrier had 3 then a gap of around 2 hours (we thought she was done) then had a still born pup and then another healthy so i would maybe be worried about a complication i would maybe phone the vet and find out what they think.

If the bitch is just lying quite contendly between births then there is usually not a problem. Having said that she could have uterine intertia, which is when the uterus just stops contracting even when there are still pups waiting to be born. Uterine inertia can be down to an enormous litter and the uterus is just so stretched its lost its ability to contract: bit like an overstretched balloon that stays big even when there's no air in it. Or inertia can be hereditary, or the bitch is too old or not in good condition, like too fat and unfit.

A vet may give a jab of oxytocin to get things started again, but it doesn't always work.

If the bitch is still panting, straining and there's no pups coming then there could be one laying sideways on to the passage: caesarian is the only option in this case.

Some bitches are just slow whelping: my Deer/Grey once took 11 hours to have a perfectly healthy litter: one born every 2 hours! Others will have a litter of 10 in 3 hours. All depends on the bitch.

The trick is to know when she is having problems and act accordingly! Not easy, even when you've been breeding for a few years: each and every whelping can be different!

Hope this helps. Best of luck.
