My pup bitch has been dug to on 5 coons solo.A couple over 20 lbs.She mixes really well and stays about 4 inches from quarry untill I open the tube then she turns up the heat and grabs. Most say take her out of the field untill a year now That I know she will go,At 12lbs I would like her to stay as she works now and wonder if the layoff will have her so eager to go at it that she may throw caution to the wind? She is now 7 mos and has engaged very well I only let her work setts that are away from trees and stony area that will be quick to dig.I am now giving her a slight layoff of a couple of weeks and only hunt 1 day a week anyway.I look forward to your advise!

I would leave her until she is about 10 months old,I worry about them loosing their 2nd teeth before they a set strong and they are still pups and ya can easily set them way back.I find It never hurts to wait ,but it can hurt if ya rush.Good luck ;)

I MYSELF AGREE WITH GREG, NEVER RUSH A PUP. WAIT UNTILL HE/SHE

HAS A FULL SET OF SECOND TEETH, THEN GO AND DO SOME GOOD STUFF

AND WITH ABIT OF LUCK YOU,LL GET SOME GOOD RESULTS,

She had all her adult teeth when I aquired her at 6 mos,From what others have said her jaw bone has not hardened yet.She is now 7 mos and I am going to wait a bit and only hunt her 1 day a weekend when I do.So far the work she has done has been text book perfect.Every animal has been forced to face her and each dig has been a 1 hole dig,we find her about 4 inches from quarry. When we open to her she really gets agressive and will counter the quarrys lunges and grab them by the muzzle.

I am going to the field with others this weekend and leaving her home. She works like a charm for my porposes and will lots of game will come behind her if she just stays the same.I do not want to make any foolish mistakes with her. With my very limited experiance in this type of hunting my view of what a good hunter is may not be the same of an acomplished hunter,to me she seems to be the real deal dog to go to ground in our area that has small holes.

Another question to all that runn patterdales is when do they stop growing?

gman-Personally I agree with the lads -hold the dog back until its at least 11/12 months. The dog will work at this age but cases of the dog becoming overmatched and possibly sickened are more commen in early starters .Allow the dog to mature mentally and muscle up before being put to work for good.Good hunting mate

  • 3 weeks later...

I would also say wait a while it certainly won't do any harm, in saying that I have no experience whatsoever of the sort of damage a coon can do to a dog, how much of a test is a coon lets say to a red fox ??

As for the growing rate much the same as any dog I find.

Gool luck with her Gman :good:

There is nothing what-so-ever to gain by starting a pup too early....its got the rest of its lifetime to be a "great"

100 percent agree most patterdales with the right blood will start early but 2 much 2 soon at a young age sickens them 18 months or even a bit longer

i agree totaly as young 1s i only take them along for experience let em run a few earths av a little go but always keep em winning ! dont let em get their confidence knocked! :good:

if left to themselves most well bred patts would be going to ground as soon as they find a earth, (dug some mine out with dead rabbits as early as 9 weeks) i think you can let most have a look from 14 months on , but remember there baby's , first season let them start ,keep them winning and begging (screaming ) for more... 2nd season or 18 -20months old let them prove themselves let them heal and keep your fingers crossed

Easy to enter, easy to spoil!

I had a young Black dog when i was starting out, started him around a year old, showed him far too much, had some cracker digs with him, some good 3/4/5 hour digs, dug a good big sette when he was around 1 1/2 years old, 9 1/2 hours he was in with 2 game that were well used to dogs, and knew the crack, and the next season he didn't want to know  I'll never ruin a young dog again, i learn't my lesson with him!

Remember - Easy to enter, easy to spoil!

Hey "G"...Did'nt they "tell" you to leave the pup be as far as working her,so her teeth can "PERMANATLY" set,and her mind can "mature??? They are "not" telling you these things for their health! If she takes a "bad-bite" or an "ass-kicking"...there is a good chance that you are going to "ruin" your terrier before you get the chance to work her.It sounds like she's got the "nack"...and she will "really" have it if you just leave her be for a few months.Just some more "friendly advice"...from another terrierworker to another.
