Acquire and hold.

Recommended Posts

I am not a stalker but that seems very little to me for any centrefire.

For my .222 and most of the centrefire users I know, we can keep 500 and Acquire 300 at any one time.

80 and 60 may be inconvenient for you if the gunshop is a long way away.

It probaby will be, but that is what Central Scotland Police will allow on a first FAC for deer stalking unless one intends to home load. But on the brighter side they do grant an open ticket from the very start.

Well you are very lucky to have that on the first grant as are many in Scotland who have it first time around.

Maybe homeloading will be a viable option if you consider the fuel cost of going to the shop for 60 rounds at a time.

I should think you could get set up for reloading for about £200, what that? about four or five trips to the gunshop and back in fuel?

The .308 is a very easy round to reload.

Advice on home loading would be very much appreciated. I was honest with the FEO, as we all should be, and pointed out that I can't afford to get a press and dies etc etc just yet. He said give it a year or so and they would look favourably on any variation to increase held ammunition.

Not really in the right section but here goes.....

I don't reload .308 but I know a lot of people that do, one of them being an FEO.

It has a reputation as a very easy round to reload and you will have a good supply of fired and formed cases from the factory rounds you shoot.

It has a very good variety of weights and bullet heads for most situations so you can develop a round that suits your rifle for any situation, say one developed especially for Reds another specially for Roe, i.e. lighter and heavier bullet heads.

Best set-up I can think of and one which I hope to be investing in shortly is the following;

First and foremost, buy yourself a good reloading manual such as Lyman, then;

Lee Cast Iron Press.

Lyman Dies and case trimmers.

I have Lee Precision scales already which I use for Shotgun Reloading.

Lee Shell Holder.

And a De-capper.

This should give me the chance to find a few rounds which my rifle likes.

P.S Remember, you still cant make more rounds than you can keep, you can have all the stuff there but at the moment you still cant hold more than 80 completed rounds, same as I couldn't have more than 500.

80/60 is very low indeed, I felt hard done by when I got 120/100 for the 22-250. 250/200 now and that seems OK for the 243.

My 308 holding is 600/500 but that's meant for range work. And since I don't have a 308 yet it's irrelevant anyway .. :)

HMR holding is 300/250, 22LR is 1000/500, 223 1200/100.

And I have 22WMR too, but I don't have one, and I don't have a slot for one... Hmm....

You must have a Quad and only the WMR barrel?

I do have a quad, in HMR. I was going to get a WMR barrel for it, but I took it off at the last variation in favour of a 308 rifle. They left the ammo...
