Slow starters

Recommended Posts

I have read about the border terriers being slow starters and thought this was rubbish as i had a demon of a bitch who was bushing and catching at 7 months old (rabbits + rats) she then went on to be a good dog below ground too

her life was ended bt a staff at 3 yeas old,i was devestated

my other bitch pictured was not showing any interest even at 9 months old and i was thinking of getting her a pet home.

she is nearly 3 now and has turned out to be excellent and everything i could want.

glad my girlfriend at the time stopped me from moving her on..

9 months is far too young to be worrying about a young dog not showing the signs,my mates bitch wouldnt look at a rat at a year old, at 20 months she had been out on lots of digs and showed no interest, he had nearly given up on her but as he had no other pup to run on at the time he decided to keep trying her. within a month or so she just clicked and started working, she is just 26 months old now but she is working well, has been dug several times now, infact im just home from digging her this evening. its hard to keep them when they arent showing much interest but sometimes it pays off

Borders are notorius slow starters and can take up to 2yrs before theyre ready...but once they do look out....You'll be glad you waited now eh!
