New ferret

Well after a total disaster with my mates ferret, i have been looking/asking around to try and get my hands on a new one, struck lucky today, after looking on line and finding ferrets for sale at around the £100 mark i then came across a rescue centre close to where i live so after a phone call i`m off to pick up a nice little polecat kit in the morning, got the pick of four young kits, i just hope all four don`t come with me.

The ferret we just lost ended up costing us £60 in total, petrol to and from, plus the £15 the boy wanted for him

The kit i`m picking up tomorrow costs nothing, but they say you can give a donation if you like, well obviously £20 aint going to brake the bank plus its going to a really good course, as i told the woman on the phone i just rang by chance because i always thought of rescue centres having older aggressive animals that nobody wants because of the way they were, and she told me that she has had ferrets/cats/dogs..... that have had problems, she thought they would never find homes but with the right looking after and handled plenty they done a whole turn and ended up being great pets, all im saying is instead of fixing your eyes in the for sale sections on forums, go and check out your local rescue centres first, you might find the perfect candidate for your needs plus you will be helping out those that use all there time and lack of money to keep doing what they are

Hope it all goes well, i gather you haven't told her you want it for ferreting. The one by me won't let you have one if they think it's going to be worked.

i have taken in rescue ferrets for two local animal rescues, had over hundred in the last two years, they are very much often the best for working.

 

most dont allow ferrets to go to working homes! Mad i know but some just dont now how to treat the wee fellows.

I just find it sad that some rescues wont home to ferreters , i homed more ferrets to falconers & ferreters than pet homes in the late 90's , they were always welcome here

When she described the kits over the phone her words were " they are lovely strong kits, will make great workers or pets, depending on what your wanting them for" i was talking with her for a good time on the phone, and she explained that they came from a man who had too many to control by him self, she then went into great detail about the mans other ferrets, how they are always out working for rabbits and so on...

He asked her to re home a large litter but she only took so many to the centre as her son took four of them straight away, i think she is clued up on the goings on out their, and as long as they go to good homes thats all that matters!!

Anyway i will see how it turns out tomorrow, let you all know

Said it before come september even the rspca will rehome to working homes because there full to the brim with kitts

thats when i get phone calls, problem is kits are nearly adults and they become even harder to train. had around 20 pne calls already this year!!! problem is the more i take the more it costs

 

still a home, working or pet is a good home.

Thats the big killer of most rescues lack of money , fund raisings great but if you work alone and dont have a huge support network its impossible to do everything, the cost of neutering alone is crippling , even with a vets reduction , people just wont pay 50 quid for a speyed jill & thats just covering the neutering cost in some areas , so the ferrets just sit there in rescue

 

Unless you have a good back up team & loads of support your very limited to what you can take , theres only so much that you can find from your own pocket at the end of the day

If i ever took a ferret from a rescue i wouldn't want or ask for it to be neutered if it tuned out a good worker you cant breed from it and if its a crap worker a snipped hob will bring it out of season
