Kits leaving nest.

Recommended Posts

The jills with their kits are currently in a two tier hutch (with controlled access to detachable outside run).

The nest area is fairly big and there's a round pop hole in the middle for them to get in and out. I've noticed the kits - although only two weeks old - are getting quite active. I was wondering how long it is likely to take them to start clambering out of the pop hole and if they'll be at risk of falling down the ladder, or if by the time they can get out they'll manage the ladder ok. Just wondered if anyone had had a similar set up as I'm worried about the kits falling!

Can you not block up the pop hole a bit just to restrain the kitts till there more able to cope with the ladder . or if you cant the jill's will keep dragging them back into the nestbox just now

Well mine are 2wks and they are crawling everywher. If the jill dont notice yes they could fall.Suppose you could put a couple of handfulls of staw@the bottom of the ladder mate.

Yeah i agree.. both my litters at 2 weeks old were escaping from the nest .. much to mum's dismay lol.. if they were on a second level i'd have had Many fall .. block it up if possible

I don't think they'll get out just yet unless the nest is built up too high, but I was watching how active they were getting and suddenly started to worry! lol.

I guess I could cover the ladder in a good layer of straw just in case. Perhaps I'm underestimating the mothering skills of my jills...

just make sure theres a good layer of woodchip at the bottom, of any "fall area"

kitts are quite tough little buggers, at one time my jill had the whole litter on a shelf in the court, maybe 30" high, a few fell off there, only to be picked back up by mum, and placed back up top,

Uless its a big drop they will be fine and if the jill thought that was going to happen would she not move them to the lower level
