Tumbleweed 1
The jills with their kits are currently in a two tier hutch (with controlled access to detachable outside run). The nest area is fairly big and there's a round pop hole in the middle for them to get in and out. I've noticed the kits - although only two weeks old - are getting quite active. I was wondering how long it is likely to take them to start clambering out of the pop hole and if they'll be at risk of falling down the ladder, or if by the time they can get out they'll manage the ladder ok. Just wondered if anyone had had a similar set up as I'm worried about the kits falling! Quote Link to post
The one 8,598
Can you not block up the pop hole a bit just to restrain the kitts till there more able to cope with the ladder . or if you cant the jill's will keep dragging them back into the nestbox just now Quote Link to post

Yeah i agree.. both my litters at 2 weeks old were escaping from the nest .. much to mum's dismay lol.. if they were on a second level i'd have had Many fall .. block it up if possible Quote Link to post
Tumbleweed 1
I don't think they'll get out just yet unless the nest is built up too high, but I was watching how active they were getting and suddenly started to worry! lol. I guess I could cover the ladder in a good layer of straw just in case. Perhaps I'm underestimating the mothering skills of my jills... Quote Link to post
stubby 175
just make sure theres a good layer of woodchip at the bottom, of any "fall area" kitts are quite tough little buggers, at one time my jill had the whole litter on a shelf in the court, maybe 30" high, a few fell off there, only to be picked back up by mum, and placed back up top, Quote Link to post
