So far the guns i own are a Sako Quad with both .22lr and .177hmr barrels, and a Baikal MP153. I did have a cz 452 but the Sako has replaced this as it saves haveing more guns in my cabinet as im limited on room!, But i am now considering a larger calibre gun something like a 223 or 243, i would like at some point to go away and try deer as we dont have any where i live but i am led to beleive it is not legal too shoot certain deer species with a 223? so this led me to getting a 243, there isnt really any larger game or vermin species in shetland which would require the use of these caibers, but the use of something more powerful at work would help. Basically i was just wondering what larger caliber guns you could suggest for the situation i have explained? i was thinking of a tikka t3 or a ruger m77 , a friend has a rugger m77 in .223 and its a excellent gun to use i cant fault it , but id like to hear other peoples opinions

well if you want deer then 243 it is mate.

you can shoot munjac, cwd, and roe deer with 223 north of the border but down here only munjac and cwd.

i would just get the 243 if i where you then you can take any deer in the uk

three makes stand out in particular remington 700, sako 75 or 85 newer model, or tikka t3 or older m595. these guns hav stood the test of time and many topics have been held about each.

remmy havea shed load of after market add-ons that you can buy and shoot well, sako is a truely amazing make quality made to last and tikka, the poor mans sako, saving on corners but delivering on the performance end,

the choice is simply yours.................... :gunsmilie: now go get one....

decisions decsions!! is there any reason for tikkas being quite cheap they look like solid enough guns ? what aftermarket addons are there for the remington?

liam

the tikka is made to a price, plastic mag. cheaper synthetic stock, cheaper materials all except for the barrel which is made for the salo's also.

remmy anything you like triggers, stocks, in all designs, are made to fit the remmy action so its just a matter of buying them and they will fit.

tikka have a good action, i own a tikka myself the older m595 model. the remmys can be heavy but i would recommend that you take a look at each of the guns you are intrested in before you buy, and maybe take a shot with them if possible...............

i dont think i will get to take a shot of anything before i buy it as my firearms supplier just works from his house he buys in what you need and thats really it , i can really only depend on other people views

Well, one thing that may boost your view on the Tikka's and Sako's is that they are both part of the Beretta Group of companies and so the standards are high. Both of these will shoot what you want them to.

Remington have wide respect across the fieldsport world and can be added to as SNAP SHOT says in a variety of ways.

Either of these rifles, or indeed, anything else which you choose these days will shoot well straight off the shelf.

The question now is calibre. For anything up to fox then the .223 or .22-250 would be ideal but if Deer is in the equation then a .243 is your only choice if you wanted to shoot anything bigger than Roe in the UK.

P.S Have you had your Quad yet? If so, where did you get it from in the end?

Yes, a .243 is a necked down .308 case, the .308 fires a larger .30 calibre bullet than the .243 which fires a .243/6mm bullet.

The obvious difference is in power, the .308 packs a bigger punch.
