FJager 0
Let the dog or other dogs lick it, believe it or not, a dogs saliva has healing properties for themselves.
sandymere 8,263
Some dogs will do more harm than good with a wound if left to their own devices. i have a bitch that will turn a scratch into an open wound in two days if left uncovered. I use the sock trick on lower legs to good effect tape above a joint where it's wider, not to tight you don't want to reduce circulation, and monitor for the first few hours. good luck. Hunting Dachshund 0
I personally like duct tape, the dogs don't like to chew it and it doesn't stretch, but any durable tape will do.If you use any tape on dogs, use athletic tape. Duct tape does not 'breathe'.
Missie 1
Thanks for all the comments guys. With any of the others I would just leave them to it as I know that dog saliva can have healing properties but her teeth are very bad and I don't want her getting anything in there. The lurcher has also become nurse maid though and he does clean it for her too. I will try the sock along with the germolene and see how she goes.

Note that in my post I stated not to put the tape on the dog, only on the sock. Perhaps I was not clear enough: DON'T PUT DUCT TAPE ON YOUR DOG'S SKIN.
Single Handed. . 1
My bitch just got over a nasty rip underneath. i tried all the powders an everythin i put on woz back off in minutes. she jumped fence only for her to land o a barbed wire one on the other side, there woz three holes altogether. two healed within three days but there was quite a big one. In the end i just went to good old warm salty water twice a day. was completly healed in a week or so. . . i left mine to long so couldnt stitch it skin went like rubber. warm salty water i guarentee it will start to heal within a couple of days. . welshphil 223
I had excellent results using honey on a very nasty wire 'rip' on my bitch's groin area, honey has anti bacterial properties and promotes new skin growth. I smeared it on the wound three or four times a day and left it on for twenty minutes (preventing the bitch from licking it off). After 20 mins I let her lick it off. The wound was totally healed after about 10 days without any scarring - I didnt use any particular type just what they had in my corner shop, worked for me anyway! Timid Toad 18
hi phill honey and cod liver gauze is the stuff to use if you can get it it works wonders on open wounds and has its own antibactirial agent in it if you know anyone at a hospital where they work on burns thats the best place to get hold of it . as for stopping the dog from licking her leg i put an old childs jumper on my dog to stop her getting at a leg wound and its healed perfect now
ghostlyease 17
I had really great results when a friend sent me Alginate dressing for an open wound on my bitch, it wasnt healing, got infected, put this stuff on and healed within the week, she also had a course of antibiotics for the infected wound. Guest lurcherboy2008
id leave nature take its course just clean it a few times a day the dog is cleaing it him self by licking it aswell i have used sicatrin powder before that seems to dry the wound up and it will scab over butt like you said its getting the dog to leave it alone put 1 of them plastic things on him he'l soon get used to it. id agree with CC my bitch had a nasty wound nott so long ago. keep it clean i cleaned mine 2ce a day, if shes licking it then it can sometimes be a good thing id say just keep it clean try cikitrin powder but if she just cant leave it alone id leave her do the job by licking and also you keep it clean by cleaning it 2ce/3 times daily, im no expert but thats just my opinion

Bryan 1,363
get some "Debrisol" or "Granulex V" sprays on it, nothing beats them for minimal scarring with open cuts Bryan
