each and everyone is different , depends on the size / weight , of the dog or bitch , most dogs are still growing well into there 12 th month , but they differ as to the breeding type , not all pups grow the same , they cant grow up , out , lenght at the same time , thats why and how they mature differently , also it can depend on the feed they are fed , good food , good growth , bad food bad growth

thats just it every dog is diffrent its the most crucial time to put time effort into a dog the first few mnths plenty of exercise to stretch them out every day an good diet i like my pups with plenty of meat on their bones give them evrey chance to reach max potenchel excuse the spelling :whistling:

Hi slip, you say plenty of exercise, yet most say, dont walk or exercise to much. And it also says a pup should have at least 18 hrs sleep aday.. This is the bit that always confuses me, to walk or not to walk.

i have , and never will , exercise any pup for any length of time , for the simple reason , they're growth plates only need to take a bang , then they are f****d , as we all agree on , pups should be brought along ,SLOWLY i also see that everybody's concept of exercise is different , but lets get one thing straight , dont rush them , it's a hard life being a working lurcher , if they are rushed into work , there life span will be shorter than one that has been given plenty of time , to , MATURE.

Most of the dogs I've had over the years have reached their full height by the time they are 10-11 months old.

They seem to sprout untill they get to 8 months then slow down.

My last bitch was 24.5" at 9 months and she finished up at 25"

The bitch before that was 25" at 9 months and finished up at 25"

And the dog before that was 23.75" at 9 months and finished up at 24"

But as has been said already they are all different.

Just a simple question, when does a male dog stop growing, and particularly height wise Is it 18 mths, or 12 mths?
When the growth plates in the long bones have disappeared. Very simply ask your vet -if it is worth it to you- to take radiographs of the leg joints and see if your dog still has his growth plates. Edited by Hunting Dachshund

Not true! During growth excessive exercise may induce joint problems and even tearing of ligaments and cartilage. During growth the entire skeleto-muscular system is in a continuously changing state. Thus not a stable situation, in which each component has reached its full strength of tissue. Add forces to this system and the weakest link will break down.

In addition to this all, young dogs (counts for humans too) do not know their own body's maximum capacity and tend to overexert themselves.

So exercise: yes, but definitely limited or in moderation during growth. With some dogs even restriction is needed.
