comanche 3,300
Made in France, where they were known as (rough translation) "Leg pull"traps by Boule & Chiet these little traps were once the mainstay of the professional pest controller in the war against wasps. Set on widowsills and other sunny areas in the Spring these little devices were intended to catch the Queens before they started nest-building. Use in this country came to an end in 1958 as they were affected by the 1954 Pests Act but abroad they are still used in fish hatcheries to control dragonfly nymphs . Primitive indeed when compared with todays' Gas-pots! Quote Link to post
Guest Ditch_Shitter
Funny; I can't find those in the Aurouze Bro's catalogue Strange how the mind plays tricks with the memory though. I'd have sworn I once saw a Bow Springed one of those. Or could both models exist? Anyway; You seen the Horselips one I put under General for ye? Quote Link to post

Guest Ditch_Shitter
Mackem; Last I knew, a mate of mine in Holland was knocking out facsimiles of one of their catalogues. I have mine right here on the shelf. Some good and weird shit in there! Pretty much something for everyone, really. I've never visited the present shop, but I do understand it to be almost kept as a museum as much as a trading centre. I think they have a row of stuffed 'dead rats' hung in the window? Quote Link to post
mackem 30,426
They do mate,I think its 21 dead rats in traps,my mate had his picture taken standing in front of the shop. I always thought it would be like the old Youngs of Misterton shop here in Blighty,I used to have one of their old catalogues when I was a kid,it made FASCINATING reading, anyone ever visit their shop? Are those catalogues in french OTC? Quote Link to post

Yes they are in French - I was just scanning the covers to post up for you but I cannot get into photobucket for some reason . . . I have a few of the Young's catalogues here too - the Aurouze catalogues are of a similar vein, loads of oddities to tempt the buyer. I used to get my traps and that from Young's but I have only been to Young's after it had closed down (but that's a different story isn't it Ditch??!!) OTC Quote Link to post
mackem 30,426
Youngs of misterton, that catalogue was my wet dream as a kid, incredible array of nets and traps,I used to get a thrill turning the pages, partridge drag-nets,hare snares, everything you could ever want as a kid Quote Link to post
Guest Ditch_Shitter
Indeed, OTC Youngs? Now that the cat's out of the bag; OTC and I are also fiends for them Mackem; Did ye ever see the Badger Tongs, fiver a set, and just have this strange, gut reaction that ye'd about kill for some? I have them here now Never crossed my mind to dig up a badger in my entire life. But, for some damn reason, those Tongs always fasinated the crap out of me. I know another bloke who felt the same way about them. God knows why. I have their Ferret Carrying Box right behind me too. In fact, I store my catalogues and other Youngs ephemera in it! I have a Little Owl here - mounted, cased and internally labled by Sam Young himself. F*ck it; Tell ye what, I was about to say something then to show just How completely obsessed with S. Young and Sons I've been all my life. But I'll do better. This may take me ten minutes or else half the bloody night - have to get my own Scanner reloaded and messed about with. But, if I can manage that? I'll show this forum a specimen of Young's memorabilia which I'm perfectly confident not one of ye has ever seen before, or indeed ever dreamed of seeing! I'll be back! mackem 30,426
I used to always send off for trapping catalogues as a kid, didnt have the money for the stuff but used to love reading about the equipment I never wanted badger tongs,I wanted fishing spears, gaffs, and I remember getting a mist net from KP&S,my dad bought it for my birthday,I got over 100 house sparrows in the back garden the first afternoon and they fed my ferret kitts, did keith pryor get prosecuted at one time for selling mist-nets to bird catchers?Old stories Quote Link to post
OldTrapCollector 377
Sound's ominous Ditch - looking forward to it OTC Quote Link to post
Guest Ditch_Shitter
There was a rumour went round, after the event, that Young's had shut down because They got busted for selling nets to Bird Catchers. That's a crock. The business, as we knew and loved it, closed because George Young, one of the sons and the one who ran the business after Sam's death, himself died. Not a lot of people know this but; Before his death, he handed over 'The Books', as it were, to some people. By that, I mean he bequeathed the family and business papers. He asked only that the operating name be changed, as he was the last of the male Young's able to be involved and wished the family business name to end with him. Fact is though that a degree of what was still is. Many on here will now be dealing with the people who took over the spirit of S. Young & Sons (Misterton) and not even realising it. How do I know so much shit about the firm? Simple: Life times obsession with them. How obsessed? Well, I never stopped at just buying up a bunch of their catalogues. No. I'm a full blown f*cking 'Stalker'! Have a look at this for a bit of curio (Scanner's not having any of it, so I had to photograph it, look) Note Sam's occupation? On census entrys, he puts himself as " Web Weaver "! Net Maker. I have shit loads of stuff on them here. One thing I've never sourced yet is an image of Samuel Young himself But I could yet do a small book on the firm. Oh, and here's a snippet from one of their old catalogues, just for old times sake! Remember those days? Quote Link to post
