Guest JohnGalway
Hi folks, Hope I'm putting this in the right section For a while now (OK like two years...) I've been wanting to buy a digital camera. I asked elsewhere in '06 and I think Lumix and Canon came out with thumbs up. The advice I was getting then was about lens quality and optical zoom rather than digital zoom (that one I actually understand!) What else do I need to know? I'll be taking my usual photos of what I shoot, some close up photos of guns and equipment and also some landscape shots to show where I hunt etc. It'll need to be reasonably user friendly I'll have it out and about with me so size matters My budget is around the £300 mark, can go a little over that but don't really want to if I don't have to, basically picked a number but I don't need the best camera ever produced nor do I want some cheap crappy thing I will take joy from when I shoot it with my shotgun out of frustration... Thanks for any and all replies, John

comanche 3,298
I was in this spot a couple of months ago when my old manual Pentax k1000SLR died. Digital SLRs are lighter but just as bulky and probably not as sturdy as the old SLRfilm cameras . Then there is the expense of extra lenses and big bags if you start becoming serious. The Photograghy side of things could overshadow the original idea of simply having a handy little camera in the top pocket .They take wonderfull pictures though !. Dad has a Canon from the top end of the "pocket digital "selection .His work meant he had almost daily experience of the printing and photograghy and he is a real perfectionist but did'nt want the bulk of an SLR.He's very pleased with it but admits he does'nt use half the functions. He tried to persuade me to buy the same model but to be honest I'm not that interested in fiddling with technology and simply asked the girl in the shop for ,"something for retards". Pentax Optio S10 . Strong, metalic bodywork, the hand book is all in simple ,step by step English and just to help idiots like me the screen displays a brief description of the selected function. Never leave home without it. Good luck Edited May 24, 2008 by comanche
FJager 0
John I am looking at updating my digital at the moment, the Panasonic Lumix FZ 18 seems to fit the bill nicely and can be picked up for a great price on the net. It fits my criteria very well, good zoom, high mega-pixels, optical image stabilizer, small and simple to use. Everyone I have spoke to that has a Lumix swears by them. Get the highest optical zoom you can and along with high mega-pixels you will get great photos. Check out the link. http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DMC-FZ18K-...5531&sr=1-
