Look for the Dreys and learn to identify them from a Crow or Magpie nest.

Then my best advice is to go out about and hour after sunrise and walk through the woods, they should be active, on the branches etc.

I love tree rat shooting, its exciting. I always have a steady dog with me aswell as they are an extra pair of eyes and ears.

Drey poking is worth doing if you know of a few dreys. But its better for the winter months.

There are squirrel calls on the market, I hear that they can be effective at times. But I have never used one.

I am up in Tynedale and there have been greys around here for only a year or two, I do my best to kill as many of them as I possibly have time for.

Im sure you will quickly learn whats what, once you get into it. And good luck!

having lived in few differant areas......there dosn't seem to be a fixed time for squirrel activity!!

but if you watch and learn their behaviour patterns you should get the results your after.

dont forget to look on the ground as well as in the tress............they are easier to see on the ground and spend a lot of time foraging!!

if you put a hand full of peanuts down in the same place everyday you'll end up constructing your own personal kill zone..................not very sporting...but if you need to cull them ?!?!?

good luck mate

Find the drey's mate and get in a position where you can put a good solid shot into it (with a 12g). If anyone is at home they are likely to pour out which can be good sport. Also... when the season is right, look for mushrooms and cobb nuts being dried in lower branches and areas on the ground (around tree stumps etc) where they sheve nuts / beechmast etc. There are also squirrel call's which can be quite fun... they get quite het-up with intruders on their match.

For sport you can shoot the dreys with a shotty or get someone to poke the dreys and shoot the emerging squirrels. Make sure there are no young left in the drey though. Air rifles can bag a decent number, but make sure its a decent one as they are pretty tough critters.

like someone said, pre baiting can reap rewards- a handful of monkey nuts in a clearing every day can get them into a pattern for you to exploit.

Dont know where you are exactly but if there are reds in your area forget about wandering willy-nilly with shotgun in hand blasting away at any drey!!
