Guest Ditch_Shitter
Some of you older guys are sure to know this one. It's something I was told about by a friend of mine who'd been there and done it, back in the day. Only he did most of it and now I'm damned if I can remember which he was talking about. Ye know what it's like; Just one of those stupid, irrellivant little points that bugs the f*ck out of ye, simply because ye can't put ye finger on it any more. (Bit like Steve Irwin's name, last saturday in the pub! Three or four of us were ripping out collective hair out over That one!) Badgers or Coypu. One or the other - both??? - were said to " Hum " as ye dug towards them. WTF was That all about??? I'd give my last teeth to hear it on a recording and I'd be absolutely fasinated to know what they looked like / were doing as they made this humming noise. Frankly, it makes no more sense, to me, that one or the other should be more predisposed towards humming at a Dog or a spade than the other one. Thus I can't guess which it would be. I also wonder what must have been going through the mind of a creature which, presumably, chose this one time in its known life to start doing something I've never heard of either species doing at any other time. Hang about! was it Coypu??? Only I just had the strangest notion that I've heard of Rats 'Humming' too. I used to keep rats and couldn't swear I'd never heard them making a sound that could be described as " Humming ". Ok, I'll leave it there. Before I get my head in any worse of a tangle than this whole question has already. Who Really Knows, please? Older members, obviously. Quote Link to post

Guest Ditch_Shitter
Wee! I'd actually quite forgotten about this one. Late night Guinness rather inspired the thought. Then a couple of PM's yesterday told me that badgers humm. Now we appear to have confirmation that coypu too do it? How f*cked up is that?! Sorry, but it just cracks me up every time I think about it. We're all used to various animals squealing, hissing, chattering or even grownling when pissed off with us. But Humming?! One more reason I'd never dig a hole. I found anything in the bottom of it humming at me, I think I'd just crease up in uncontrollable laughter and that would be that! Thanks for sorting out one of the great mysterys of a non diggers life, lads Quote Link to post

Waz 4,293
I am not saying badgers dont hum. But ive never heard them. I have heard young badgers chatter. This is only in my experience of being an avid wildlife watcher in their own enviroment up close, of course within all relevant laws etc etc. LOL @ Fish, thats twice within as many minutes youve got me laughing out loud. (first time was a nervous type of laugh!). YIS WAZ Quote Link to post

Guest pikey
badgers do humm or make vocal nioses saw the ground vibrate with them a funny feeling it was very shallow were he was at , it was kinda like a vibraition got to agree with whin badgers do humm, going back the years when i used to dig badgers it was well known that the badger that hummed were indeed the badger that gave a fair bit of stick to a terrier, badgers that hummed would often grab hole or try to bite the spade / bar in a blocked end. humming was a sure sign that he was in bad humour.
