Nest Finders ~ Please Have A Look

Many of ye, being out and about, possibly even at a bit of a lose end in the 'off season' have demonstrated that ye obviously pretty damn good at finding and identifying birds nests and eggs. Cool.

Now I wonder if I may run this idea past ye? Quite simply; As well as finding these nests / eggs and showing us ye photo's, might it be possible that some of ye actually go that one step further? The main point being that ye return to what ever nest ye discover, at least the once, and make some simple and basic notes about the contents and the habitat ye found it it. Help the BTO Nest Recording Scheme.

Ye can do this 'on a postcard' or on line, as ye wish. The information ye gather - be it one single nest or even a whole raft of nests, of one or a multitude of species - is then sent to the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) at the end of the season and they make good use of it all by plotting the ups and downs of bird populations through out the land. Thus they produce scientific data which governments pay attention to and act on. It's due to people like us feeding the BTO our little snippets and tips that the world now knows of the plight of the House Sparrow in uk, eg.

Anyway, I won't bang on about it. Just to say it's dead simple. Involves next to nothing from ye that ye not already doing for fun ~ if anything, it makes it more fun and rewarding. It just seems a crying waste that any of ye out there finding nests may be doing nothing more constructive with such expertise than slapping up pictures and posting to each other about ye finds.

Oh and, by the way; The BTO has about as much to do with the RSPB as the FMWTC has in common with BASC. BTO doesn't go round kicking in doors and giving people a hard time. It's purely a body dedicated to the generation and collation of statistics. No politics. No axes to grind. No reserves. Nothing. Just think of the BTO as one huge, non judgemental computer into which millions of normal people feed bird data. BTO; Bird Tallying Organisation.

Have a look for yeselves. It's all Here.

Thanks :good:
