dogs-n-natives 1,182
now I would NOT run foxes at this time of year (or anytime of year of course) because you just would not account for the cubs. Why wouldnt you account for the cubs?? If im called upon to kill foxes in spring time, and found that I'd killed a vixen in milk, I would be out looking for the cubs, as would most responsible keepers/pestcontrollers. Obviously winter is when you should be aiming to get the numbers of prolific pests down, but there are times when spring/summer pest control is essential, even though it is distasteful. But it should be undertaken carefully. JMO just to add to this boiling pot , these lads do not have permission and the farmer concerened will definatly not have asked them on his land as he like to see the hares around Back to Moley's point. I think the type of lurcher man you mean are usually slipping their dogs from a vehicle, they are often townies, or just thick. And have little idea of what damage their doing, or of they do, they simply dont care! It happens around here aswell, they cruise around, lamping from their vehicle, and slip their dogs on the first hare they see. And if they are leverets or does carrying young....all the better for them! They simply want blood and have no idea of the dammage that they cause. ITS DISCRACEFUL!!!!!!!!! Quote Link to post
moggs 18
FOXES NEED TO BE CONTROLLED!!!!!!! THEY ARE A PEST! HARES DONT TAKE LAMBS AND CHICKENS E.T.C! I PROVIDE A SERVICE FOR FARMERS/LANDOWNERS AND GAMEKEEPERS! (WHEN IM NEEDED) FOX HUNTING SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN CLASSED AS A SPORT BUT AS A FORM OF PEST CONTROL! OPEN YOUR EYES PEOPLE! (I DONT ENJOY KILLING FOX CUBS< BUT IF THE SITUATION SAYS THEY NEED TO BE CONTROLLED I WILL CONTROL THEM) Think this post hits the nail on the head. Job done. Quote Link to post

ITS DISCRACEFUL "TOWNIE" i live in manchester on the outskirts of the cheshire plains. i certainly dont lamp from a vehicle nor do any one that i hunt with. we do the odd bit of poaching but we do not run hares or on the lamp or damage any property of the landowners. with the hunting laws the way they are its a sure way to get yourself nicked! Im not pointing the finger at all town dwellers! I know some good lads from the town. And im not saying its wrong to use a vehicle. But the majority of the summer hare poachers that get seen or caught by keepers/police in my neck of the woods are from the city or nearby towns. Job done. well not quite..... just because a hare has not got sharp teeth and doesnt take stock or fowl dos not make it a none pest, as you know theres three main types of farmers.. mixed stock, dairy, and arable.... now in arable farming areas hares can in there right numbers be a very serious pest....... instead of agreeing that people should open there eyes may be you should broaden yours and see the bigger picture.. inan 841
how are you expected to break a pup to hares and build experience on coursing and catching them without running summer hares if your pup's training falls in the spring/summer seasons? If you are in a country where you can legally run them ,try getting the dog out in Sept ,when the hares arent as wily or strong.Double your pup up with another dog ,or slip it in halfway intoa course,no need for Summer runs imo. inan 841
Aye, it would......... The point of the question is, the circumstances dont really matter.............if you would, then you would. Which also means that folk cant put down other lads that are doing it. Now I dont mean this in a funny way at all, but it is strange that the members who were so quick to jump down the lad that is lampings throat, have been so slow to give a reply to that question. Ill answer you smartface,I will lamp rabbits if they are going to be shot if I dont. I dont lamp hares Spring,Summer ,Autumn,or Winter I run Hares from late Sept to beginning of March .Satisfied? Inan. Wasnt trying to be smart, as I said, I wasnt being funny..............a shame you took it that way. You love your hares and fair play to you, I know a lot of lads that do............now I would NOT run foxes at this time of year (or anytime of year of course) because you just would not account for the cubs. I was just stating, that folk cant put a lad down if there moral high ground only extends as far as a phone call from the farmer or keeper. Now you said that you would not (when it was legal) run hares, now if your permission was a large shooting estate and they were going to hold a cull but gave you 1st shout, would you run em or let some other fella do it? Sorry I was rude ,without cause ,but this subject gets put up now and again by people ,usually youngsters ,trying to justify running summer hares,by saying" Im, bringing a pup on ",bullshit! You can give a young dog runs early in Sept on hares that are not experienced or that strong ,maybe a few doubled up runs and slipping a pup in on a course ,this wont involve running milky does or nursing ones.Hare shoots ,in my experince take place at the end of the shooting season , so I wouldnt be asked, but I wont dodge the question,no I wouldnt run hares in summer whatever the reason.I would run them beginning of March if they were going to shoot them I think thats acceptable. Guest fight the ban
great to see people playing nice together. why cant people learn not to post if it dose not add somthing of value and why does some people have to lose it just cause somone adds there opinion. MY OPINION is that running summer hare is a good way to bring a young dog on but in long run you are cutting your throat for when dog is older. but september when breeding is about finish and crops are cut, the hare finds its self in a strange enviroment and is easier to run. bringing a dog on at this time gives you the advantage of easy hares (for people with a dog that needs them) and give hares time to breed to keep healthy population, making a win win situation. OR AND WHERE IM FROM WE DONT HAVE PROBLEM WITH RUNNING SUMMER HARES BECAUSE DOG LADS RAN THEM RAGGID TWO SUMMERS AGO AND THEY'VE NEVER COME BACK SINCE. Quote Link to post

Ever heard of the closed season? ive never seen ahare in abutchers shop You need to get out more. Have you ever seen a game licence? It says hares may not be offered for sale ,and gives the months. Why do you think that is? Look at the end of the day if you are happy running pregnant and nursing doe hares through the summer months no one on here is going to influence you,but any young lad ,just starting out might ,I say might, just stop and think whether its what he wants to be doing. When your dog makes that catch ,and hopefully brings it back to you ,and you see it has a belly full of leverets ,or is full of milk ,meaning there are leverets somewhere waiting to be fed,if that doesnt take the shine off it for you then the dissaproval of some of us surely aint going to change your ways.
