Depends how much the dogs are doing mate,if they are only getting one walk a day and the odd shift then they won't benefit from too much, they'll be bouncing off the walls. Then again if they are out every night then they could cope with more.

I give mine 28%Beta Greyhound and raw rabbit, hare giblets ,pilchards ,and chicken thighs for the fat .plus yeast and cod liver supplements,I usually cut the Beta with a lower protein bag in the summer months.24% won,t hurt any dog if it is getting some work.

I tend to agree with you, it depends on how much work they are getting. Greyhounds are fed roughly 20% protein when at rest and 27% to 30% when training and racing. I'm not ashamed to say, I'm a fan of complete greyhound foods, (fed well soaked of course).

Years ago good complete food was hard to get, and you had to make your own recipes up. A lot of lurcher men used feed almost exclusively meat, and green tripe in summer.

Some friends of mine who still call chavey, still feed their dogs this way, but I think they are losing out to people who feed their dogs on a more scientific diet.

Remember carbs are for energy, and protein is for muscle building and repair, so feed high protein soon after physical exertion, (long hard runs), and yes I do believe too much protein every day can cause liver damage, especially coupled with a low water content.

And remember if you're stuck for food, cat food is about 30% protein, I get mine from a supermarket beginning with 'n'.

My god, you know as much as me now!

All I know is that when one of my dogs appeared to be having small fits but was still conscious, we took her to vets and was told that it was to do with her body not being able to cope with the protien levels in her food. We were at that time giving her 24% mid winter beating and working her socks off, so thought she needed something extra WRONG it was the Carbohydrates she needed rather than protien. Now running very nicely ta on 18% plus rabbits, venison bones, chicken wings etc etc Touch wood since we changed her diet, no more of the fitting behaviour. For those interested enough her condition was a post hypatic shunt basically liver not coping with the amount of protien and the protien being sent direct through her blood to her brain - causing a few short circuits!

I understand you cutting down the protein ,if that was recommended ,but rabbit.and chicken are packed with it so I dont see what you have gained.I can,t see 24% protein having a detrimental effect on a dog that is worked regular, mine are on 28%,plus raw meat and supplements, dogs that get more protein than they need excrete it as normal according to what Ive read ,I recommend , the book,Veterinary

Advice for Greyhound Owners ,by John Kohnke ,it has good chapters on all aspects of ruuning dogs ,nutrition, injuries ,behaviourol, and general health care .
