DUCKWING 302
WELL LADS , THIS YEAR FROM ONE BLOCK OF WOODLAND BOARDERING A FRIENDS HOME ...........IVE HAD 27 SQUIRRELS IN THE POLE SNARE SET UP , THE LITTLE BLIGHTERS HAD CHEWED IN TO HIS HOME THROUGH A BARGE BOARD ON HIS GABLE END AND CAUSED A BIT OF DAMAGE ............ THEY WERE DRAWN IN BY THE WIFE FEEDING THE BIRDS ON TWO FEED TABLES ........ SO I SET THE POLES IN THEIR AREA AT FIRST TO CATCH THE MAJORITY , TOWARDS THE BACK OF THEIR LARGE GARDEN THERES A BIT OF ROUGH WOODLAND BOARDERING THE ROAD ..... AND A LARGE WOOD , THE SQUIRRELS ARE MOVEING ALONG A DRYSTONE WALL TO THIS PROPERTY SO I SET UP A FEW POLES FROM THE WALL TO TREES .......... WITH BAIT STATIONS ..... SO I COULD SEE WHEN A NEW UNINVITED GUEST HAD ARRIVED AS BY NOW THE HOME OWNERS WERE GETTING PARANOID AND CALLING ME EVERYTIME THERE WAS A FECKIN NOISE IN THE HOUSE ! ANYWAY , ......... THE BAIT WAS GOING DOWN THIS WEEK SO I RE- SET THE SNARES ON TWO POLES THESE ARE TWO SHOWING ARE ..........TWO STRAND STAINLESS STEEL SNARES WITH MINI SWIVELS FITTED ONE FITTED WITH A PLASTIC TUBE FITTING AS GW DOES WITH THE FOX SNARES ......... AND CLIPPED ON TO A QUICK CLIP INTO A PROTUDEING FENCING STAPLE . CHECKED THEM THIS MORNING ........... AND FOUND THIS FELLOW ................... THE SNARE WAS SET 4 1/2 " HIGH WITH A 4 " LOOP , HENCE THE FRONT LEG THROUGH THE WIRE ALL THE BEST DUCKWING Quote Link to post

proper job 1
Nice job there Duckwing, what sort of lock are you using? Quote Link to post
snareman 3
Nice job there Duckwing, what sort of lock are you using?, theres no lock p. j. its just a double strand of stainless steel wire same length as a rabbit wire , its very strong and great for rats, rabbits , and squirrels, and runs very fast , i have caught occasional rats in my mink snare at around 4 inches on ground runs ,but i know from snaring a lot of rats this past few years that they run higher than people think they do , just like the rabbits they also run high , the rats also spring higher in longer grass , again a larger noose is needed to allow for any margin of error , Quote Link to post
DUCKWING 302
TOO RIGHT THEYRE STRONG SNAREMAN , THESE SNARES HAVE BEEN ON ALL SEASON AND HAVE NOW HAD 27 SQIGS AND THE SCALELY TAIL IN 10 WIRES , AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE PHOTOS THEY HAVE HAD SOME USE , THE QUICK CLIPS ARE AN EASY WAY OF REMOVEING THE SNARES .......... THE SWIVELS I ADDED JUST TO TAKE A BIT OF PRESSURE FROM THE SNARE DURING THE CATCH .... I THINK ITS WORKED AS THE WIRES ARE STILL IN GOOD SHAPE ,............ I ALSO ADDED THE CLEAR PLASTIC TUBEING TO THE SNARES IN A MINI VERSION OF THE FOX WIRES SNAREMAN USES AS A TWO SECOND ATTACHMENT TO THE WIRE TEALERS ,......... RATS ? ............... WELL ........... ME AND OLD SNAREMAN HAVE HAD THE CRAIC FOR MONTHES ABOUT SNAREING THEM ............ IVE ALWAYS USED A LARGER NOOSE THAN MOST SET HIGH THAN MOST SET THEM ........... SNAREMAN . SEEMS TO HAVE THE SAME CONCLUSIONS , HAVEING SET THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF SNARES FOR MINK , FOX , AND RABBITS ......... A LARGER NOOSE SET WELL UP ...... SNAREMAN .......... IVE ANOTHER FEW BLOCKS OF WOODLAND GIVEN TO ME OVER THE LAST WEEK TO DO FOR THE SQUIRRELS ......... CUT A FEW MORE POLES TODAY ,...... WILL LET YOU KNOW HOW I GET ON ALL THE BEST DUCKWING Quote Link to post

daunker 0
Interesting setup, and I for one appreciate all the knowledge that snareman is sharing. This particular wire - is there a good place to get it, I presume it doesn't come double stranded? Quote Link to post
snareman 3
Interesting setup, and I for one appreciate all the knowledge that snareman is sharing. This particular wire - is there a good place to get it, I presume it doesn't come double stranded? im afraid it does not come double stranded, it is a single strand, same diam. as rabbit snare wire , it is extremely strong , its good for rats single stranded, and doubled ,the double strand snares are great for squirrels and rabbits , runs like lightning, woodga and i used it two srands of steel with two of brass and it made a very strong thin snare , i don,t know where you might get it now, as i got a few drums of 4kilos, and also ten kilos , it was given to me from an old guy who had it in his shed for years, he has since died . i gave peg and gun a drum also. but he may have sold it. duckwing is more than pleased with it , but you must be able to purchase it somewhere it cant be hard to get. This article is a good one Glenn, it demonstrates several things, firstly that rats and squirrels run higher on a wider log than a smaller round one, which like a lot of things we learn, seems logical after we are told about it, but not if we are left to think it out ourselves. We must learn to look and think and visualise your target species as they go along the runs. It also shows how the methods you devised for fox snares can be utilised for other applications, ie the swivels and fast connecters. Duckwing knows his stuff, and I just hope that all the young guys on here realise the wealth of experience they have to learn from. Quote Link to post

DUCKWING 302
WELL IANROB , YOU GOT THE JIST OF THE POST WITHOUT ME HAVEING TO WRITE 2 FECKIN PAGES ........ SNAREING ISNT AS EASY AS READING A BOOK ITS ABOUT GETTING OUT THERE , MISSING CATCHES FIGUREING OUT WHY ? ........ THEN RIGHTING YOUR WRONGS ..... AND MAKING THAT CATCH , SNAREMANS RIGHT AS ALWAYS ........... A SIMPLE THING LIKE THE DIAMETER OF THE POLE CAN AFFECT THE HEIGHT OF YER SNARE AND THE TARGET SPECIES RUNNING IT ,........ ITS MAYBE HARD TO SEE FROM THE PHOTO BUT I ACTUALLY SET THE WIRE ON A NARROW POINT IN THE POLE , BUT TO KEEP THE WIRE LOOP AT THE WIDTH I WANTED ... I DOG LEGGED THE HOOP AT EACH SIDE ABOUT THE HEIGHT OF THE TOP OF THE POLE ........ LITTLE FACTORS LIKE THIS .... IMO........ HELP ME CATCH MORE ...... EVERY SET HAS GOT LITTLE FACTORS SUCH AS THESE ..... YEP IAN ........ I HAVE UTILISED THINGS LIKE THE SWIVELS , CLIPS , CONNECTORS ETC WHICH SNAREMAN DEVISED ....... TO BE HONEST THEY ARE FAR TOO GOOD TO BE JUST USED ON THE FOX SNARES AND I FIND THEM A GREAT HELP IN SETTING THE WIRES , BEING NUMB HANDED ....... AFTER ALL IAM ONLY A DOG LAD .......... I WOULD NOT FOR ONE MINUTE PUT MYSELF IN THE SAME STREET AS SNAREMAN , WOODGA OR PEG AND GUN FOXDROPPER ......... DEPENDING ON THE LENGTH OF THE POLE I SET UP TO 2 SNARES ON THEM LEADING TO A BAIT STATION AND 2 SNARES LEADING AWAY , THOUGH IF THE SQUIRRELS ARE FEEDING FROM THE BIRD TABLES ETC ......... I WILL USE THEM AS THE STATION IF TREES ARE NEAR ENOUGH ALL THE BEST DUCKWING Quote Link to post
