bill88 6
Just wondered what peoples view's are on running a bitch while in season. My colliexgrey has always been "clean" when in season, just a few drops of blood and slight swelling so i've usually just cut down the amount of work, but not stopped completely. My BeddyxWhippet is in her first season now (12 months old) and is very swollen, and very bloody,so i've not bothered running her at all for the last fortnight.I've heard different views on this over the years,my old man would stop working the bitch for a month, whilst ive heard of others who just carry on as normal. Some say the hormone changes effect the dogs ability/drive others say its more of a physical change that slows the bitch.Whats everyones views on this, and who does what when there bitch is in season? Would light work be ok? or should the bitch stop completely? is it because the bitch will be slower,or have less drive? or would running a bitch in season be bad for the bitche's health? Mars 42
I cant see why you should stop running a bitch in season, unless it`s like roybo says an you work your bitch with mates dogs, Cant see a wild dog not eating for a month !!!!!!!! or it`s pack mates saying you stay at home darling and put your paws up, we`ll go and catch dinner for ya cant have you running around in your condition can we Or perhaps her pack mates leave her behind because of her "BLOODY MOOD SWINGS" fecking hormones, Yis Mars. There are linked physical ,hormonal and mental changes that can affect bitch's behaviour, performance and concentration.Sometimes the first inkling that a bitch may be coming "in"occurs a couple of weeks before the show of blood with subtle changes in behaviour ,even a degree of "naughtyness".A fit bitch would certainly technically be capable of continuing some work but her mental state may not be completely "on the job".Only you know your own bitch. Perhaps the main reason for not working an "in" bitch is social responsability. To take a sexually alluring bitch onto the streets, into the countryside or anywhere her hormonaly charged scent trail may drift or leave a residue is very unfair on local dogs and their owners. When the male hormones kick -in the best trained entire dog may be tempted to run a line on the bitch with little regard for distance or traffic.I probably am old fashioned but i was brought up to believe that it was neighbourly to keep an "in" bitch at home for 2or 3 weeks both for the sake of her chastity and the safety and mental well-being of the local dog population. As for the cretins that take "in-season" bitches to shows and stand about taking the mickey out of competitors in the racing ,agility or obedience events who can't understand why their hitherto well behaved dogs have suddenly become sex-obsessed retards....Cretins.
