arcpest 6
Hi all my new Tikka T3 varmint s/s .223 came today It has .223 8" on the barrel I presume the 8" is referring to 1-8 twist can anyone confirm this and from what i have read This is better for heavier bullets arcpest Quote Link to post

The 1:8 is best for heavier bullets - 55gr and up to 70+. So yep, you're right Quote Link to post

The 1:8 is best for heavier bullets - 55gr and up to 70+. So yep, you're right He's smart ain't he this Mr_Logic! About 2-3 years back Tikka/Sako changed from1:12 to 1:8 twist on all their .223 Rem. They have now decided to go back to 1:12. For a while both will be available until stocks of 1:8 have all gone. Perhaps 1:10 then ...who knows??? Although according to the formula 1:12 does seem more appropriate on the whole... .....my old mate Sir Alfred George Greenhill worked out the twist rate formula....this is the time honoured formula everyone still works to and the really good news is...it nearly always works HHMMMMM!!!!! Pay attention The required twist in calibres is 150 divided by the length in calibres. So, if you have a 180 grain 30 calibre bullet 1.35 inches long, you first divide 1.35 by .30 to get the length in calibres (4.5). Then you divide 150 by 4.5 and get a fraction over 33. That's in calibres, so to bring it into inches of linear measure, you multiply by .30. It does work...most of the time...please don't ask what happens the rest of the time...George died in 1927! I've got a Tikka T3 Lite s/s 1-8 and so far i can't get it to group at 100 mts looks more like i've used a shotgun!! I'm going to try some 75 grain ammo to see if i get on any better (69 brain Sierra's aren't doing it). Quote Link to post

There is a general suggestion that the tighter the twist the heavier ammo, well........ don't ask me why, and don't ask Tikka (because I already have and they don't know either!) but the 1-8 twist works great with 55g and 62g so try some lighter ones not heavier! Guest JohnGalway
I used to own a T3 Stainless Varmint (no, I'm not gonna start bitching about it again). It also had a 1 in 8 twist rate and it liked 50 grain bullets the best. Heaviest I could find were 75 grain Hornadys, think my 12ga did a tighter pattern... lol. Quote Link to post
