How to get a FAC

Hi,

I have a shotgun cert and have had it for abou 5 months now and im intrested in getting into rifle shooting.I was checking out the NRA site and they offer loads of courses. Are these courses neccesry as they do black powder handgun shooting which i have no intrest in.

Would i be able to get a FAC if i just joined a club even if i had no coaching or anything.I know someone who got a FAC without ever using a rifle before but he had his own land to shoot over.

Thanks.

Two ways of doing it.

1. Join a rifle club and shoot targets. You will need to be a full member before you get a rifle of your own, typically six-month probationary membership first.

2. Get permission over some land, get a rifle to shoot animals.

Animals are more fun IMHO, but target shooting's good too.

As mentioned in PM, yep, pretty much. If you have never fired a rifle before I would consider joining a club anyway, you will learn a lot. The FEO will be nervous of granting it if you haven't fired a weapon before, so you will have to talk to him about safety. Shotguns should help you there though, I wouldn't be overly concerned.

Club will teach you all you need to know about firearms handling, and like I said, it really is a good idea.

Can i just join a club without having to do any courses, maybe just a lesson or two.

Can you hire rifles out from the club if you are not a FAC holder.

in most cases you have a 6 month probation perid before being a full member but normally they will accept you as a prob member as a novice and will teach you what you need to know once your a full member you can get a rifle for targets and game at the same time

they will have club rifles for you to use there

thanks

As soon as i am a full memeber they will let me hire rifles without needing a FAC for target and game?

????????

If you are a FULL member of a Home Office approved club you can use, and have access to FAC rated tools, without actually holding a FAC. I have never heard of a Target club hiring rifles to a member for Game shooting, it is most unlikely Target club rifles/ammo will be conditioned for "Game". I struggle to see a situation, where, as a non FAC holder, you could "hire" a gun and then shoot game on land without it being some sort of organised Game Hunting Holiday or just possible you hired a gun from the owner of the land.

The answer is therefore possibly half yes and probably half no!

Ok thanks.I only want to hire rifles out for targets. If i did not have a FAC but was a full member would they let hire rifles for target.

I have been looking on some police websites and i now hear you need a sponsor who has a FAC to get you into the club.I dont bloody know anyone who has a rifle.

Not really a case of hiring one, if you're a member you just borrow it when you're there.

I don't know if you are misunderstanding something or it is simply badly worded but I am Secretary of a Home Office Approved Club at Bisley. You do NOT need a sponsor to come to the club, and you can come as a guest visitor without any FAC as long as you complete a Section 21 (which I keep). The majority of our guests do however come with a member!

If subsequently you wish to become a member you will need to be proposed by a member (which will be simple and easy because if the club was not happy with you as a guest you will already have been told you are no longer welcome), complete the application forms, pay your membership subs to the Treasurer and behave yourself etc. etc!

You will then serve a probationary period and upon successful completion of this you will become a full member.

Nah mate, I don't think he's misunderstood. The HP club I am a member of needed someone to sponsor a visitor. I happened to bump into one of the committee on AirgunBBS so he did me, but when I took the other half along I had to ask very nicely.

I am guessing it's to do with the Home Office approval and some clubs not being approved? Because the fullbore angle from your club is very different to the process I had to have with the rimfire club. (much better actually because I can shoot sooner ;))
