Otter predation

Recommended Posts

Not too far from where I saw an otter on the levels , vid gives an idea of what's getting eaten.

Someone I spoke to said well they're natural etc, but my view regarding the local levels etc is that they're manmade and would've been marshland and we would've had beavers creating more marsh along the rivers and whatnot,I think otters must think it's shooting fish in a barrel, but I don't have much knowledge on them tbh .

I took pictures of the otter I saw , but I can't see the otter in any of them lol...

See them all the time on the Ribble and Calder , usually on their own but sometimes in pairs and even with a couple of young . Even had them swim within touching distance while wading on a few occasions . Also see them on the straight mile section of the Leeds Liverpool canal in Burnley .
Not the best quality but this is a screenshot of one I filmed eating a decent size fish in ribchester

There’s loads of otters local, there is sometimes a couple in the lake out back, they are legal to trap with leg-hold or Body-grip,the UK should start issuing fisheries with licences for rogue otters.

They need to have some sort of management, I liked seeing the otter tbh , but then I remembered the video with all the pike tails, lol. Cormorants definitely want shooting I probably saw twenty of the buggers in groups of 3/4 and lots of singles...wait til the beavers get down there , that said there's not many trees lol. Saw a vid earlier on broads and the guy was saying otters are just part of it , he's caught fish whilst the otters hunt and eat around him. Maybe the broads is such a large expanse of water it can support it , he also said nice to see herds of 40+red deer on the broads that will need controlling because of tree damage. Then said the broads were declining as it wasn't stocked and diesel from the boats .
