I popped into the rfd on Saturday and in the rack was a 77 blue laminate which looked stonking but of course as a laminate it will look good anyway and I know mine will not look as good but I do fancy it in blue. When I pick up my rimmy which is on hold until my variation comes back, may well be a candidate for a green stock but we will see. I am hoping to get stuck in on Thursday as I have quite a few jobs to get out of the way, the Xmas trimmings and outdoor lights are now all back in the loft so that is one out of the way. philpot 5,160 Posted Wednesday at 10:36 Author Report Share Posted Wednesday at 10:36 I had an update price for cerekote finish which has gone up to £145 and needs completely stripping down in order that each section can be treated in it's own right. Well as I have said before, I am not very good with mechanics, NO, I am shit at mechanics so taking it all apart and then trying to put it back together is not for me in any bloody way. I am really not sure what to do with the metal work, I will sleep on that when I have cleaned it with wire wool and possibly 2500 grit emmery paper. Just about to make a start with paint stripper on the stock Phil Quote Link to post
JayB0 127 Posted Wednesday at 14:01 Report Share Posted Wednesday at 14:01 Cant wait to see how you get on bud! Ive been speaking with jimmy about getting something as a project again, the hours of sanding seem prefect for keeping me out of the Mrs way actually she’s pretty keen on the idea of it too! Jason You should have bought one of the springers I had for sale for a pal of mine but he took them back leaving me with just this 77. Quote Link to post

philpot 5,160 Posted Thursday at 18:22 Author Report Share Posted Thursday at 18:22 Yesterday I made a start with stripping the stock using Screwfix own brand paint/varnish stripper which is water washable so no smells or nasty slop to get rid of although I had to keep our 5 cats out of the way. You can see on the last set of photos that there are some dark areas which look like stain from a previous period and after a number of texts with my old pal, our Jimmy, I decided to completely apply the paint stripper again today but the dark areas were still there. Looking at the butt end, i could see the pattern from the dark areas were carried right through the stock onto the other side so there is little point in trying to apply more stripper to move something that can't be moved or sanded out (I tried that). I must say the paint stripper is quite easy to remove from the stock with a good wash in hot soapy water using a nail brush followed by a rinse again with hot water. I am pleased to see the tiger stripes which I hope will be highlighted with colour stain. My pal popped round this morning with a red and a blue wood stain, I thought he had a green as well but it was all used sooooo I either go and buy a green stain or pick one of the these. I have already tested on a piece of wood to show Jimmy which he liked, BOTH TOGETHER came back the reply.............. cheers Jimmy The stock is now drying after it was washed again and for those of you who have never done this proceedure, the grain really pops with the wood having what can only be described as a 'hairy' effect ready for a good sanding down which I will be doing tomorrow and hopefully I will finish up with a nice smooth surface. At this moment I have not decided whether I am going to varnish the stock or oil it, the jury is out on that because I will not be able produce a stock of sheer stunning finish due to the dark areas which will prevent me from getting the perfection that Jimmy has produced on a number of his projects. To be honest, now that I know the dark areas cannot be sanded out, I am quite content to simply get the gun as nice as I can. It would be nice to have a stunning gun at the end of the work but this is an old gun that clearly has not been taken care of but nevertheless I will still get pleasure using it. philpot 5,160 Posted Thursday at 18:52 Author Report Share Posted Thursday at 18:52 These are the two stains I have rubbed onto some wood with a cloth, the right hand side has had two coats and whilst oil or varnish will bring out the grain and colour bear in mind it looks a bit weak at the moment, Which would you choose ??? molehill 26 Posted Friday at 06:24 Report Share Posted Friday at 06:24 (edited) I must admit i did not like the sound of the blue stain but wow that looks good! I think id pick that if it was me. tru oil it! Spray water on it then let it dry to make it hairy and keep doing that untill its smoth as glass for when the stain is applied it wont go hairy again lol. Its all in the preperation. You can make it very glossy or nock it back to mat with some extra fine wire wool. Tru oil for gun stocks makes them pop! Do the chequering last with a little bit of tru oil on a toothbrush so it doesnt get filled in and stays crisp. I used to hang my stocks in the shower where its dust free and rub the tru oil in with bare hands after rubbing them together to warm the tru oil up a bit and massage it on. A little bit of oil goes a very long way after the 1st coat. Leave 24 hours between coats. Every layer that goes on it just gets better. Take a week just oiling a bit each day to build it up. Any imperfections in the oil in between coats can be taken off with fine wire wool. Very forgiving stuff and looks amazing. Tough finnish too when its cured a week or so. When dyed if you wipe a bit of spit on the stock you can see what it will look like once the tru oil goes on so you get an idea if you like the amount of stain you have on. I cant wait to see how it will look when done! Birchwood Casey Tru Oil Gun Stock Finish 90ml Shotgun Air Rifle 3 fl oz | eBay UK EBAY.US There is no better oil finish! Birchwood Casey Tru Oil.
