Styles of hunting..

A post of mine was altered the other day, because it depicted two dogs chasing a hare and this got me to thinking about my style of hunting.

I know the purists like certain forms of hunting to be done in certain ways. And i can completely understand that. But surely your type of hunting depends upon the chosen quarry, chosen lurcher/terrier type and something not often talked about...the terrain!

My preferred type of hunting is mooching through the day with a pack of dogs. Therefore any quarry be it a mouse to a roe will normally be hunted by more than one dog. The type of terrain i hunt makes it near on impossible for a single dog to catch, even at this time of year the cover is still very high, gorse never goes away, and it will only get worse from spring through to January.

Hares or roe very rarely sit in open fields here, if they do, they make for the thick cover or woods immediately, same with the humble bunny.

Therefore most of my hunts are usually going to feature more than one dog hunting. Is this wrong? Because if it is then others who use terriers/teckels/Bassets for bushing, and different lurcher types for catching are all also wrong?

Surely one for the pot is still one for the pot whether it be one dog or five?

how you hunt and what type of dogs/dog you use depends largely on the terrain you are working ... as you have pointed out moll the land available to you is thick with cover and one dog would find it hard pushed to catch anything where as the man who lives smack in the middle of the fens with miles of open land can do well for himself with just one dog ... personnaly i like to work just one lurcher and one terrier when i am out alone ... the terrier does the bushing pushing out the rabbits for the lurcher to catch ... i also like to be out with the lurcher letting her hunt up infront of me and finding and catching game but i have endless miles of land to do this and i can pick whether i want to hunt open land with the lurcher or go to a place with some cover and bring the terrier ......
