philpot 5,171
Not set at zero yet because the bloody peep sight is twisting so I am back at the range tomorrow afternoon and hope to sort it then. I am leaving the bow to get that sorted if need be while we are away and the arrows are too long so I am getting cut down from a huge 34'' down to 29''. My wife, Trish, is testing a compound bow tomorrow as well but this one has a maximum of 35lb so ideal for her, smaller and lighter so I may be buying another tomorrow if she likes it. As I have 12 arrows, assuming the weight is okay for her, I may have 6 of them cut down for her size. The arrows are carbon and perfectly straight and as they were included in my deal, we can split them to use for practice or garden use and later buy a decent set each. I have both a wrist trigger release and also a thumb release so I will no doubt lose one of them to Trish if she has the bow and I think that will be the Centric thumb release. If I have to replace it, I may try one from Temu as I have no intention of paying between £100 - £300 for a release and unless I am picked for the England team, I never will apend that much on a release. 1 Quote Link to post
philpot 5,171
WELL !!!!!!!!! my dear wife fell in love with the compound bow she was trying out so needless to say, I bought it for her, I knew this was not going to be cheap. A new release aid to go with the bow............. ouch. Nevertheless she did very well with it and finished the session on a high with a good group in the target. We popped down to another dealer on Friday to buy a few more things including a large foam target for use at home both inside and outside plus some nice bow bags etc etc etc etc.................... It's just as bad as shooting, the dealer's shop was amazing and we were a bit like kids in a candy shop. I have stopped now apart from some different arrows for Trish as her bow we think may need some lighter arrows than mine but she can buy those.............perhaps. Phil 1 1 Quote Link to post

philpot 5,171
I try to buy from my local range/dealer but as he is trying to sell up and retire, his stock is not so good. We got our bows from him but we have bought our follow up purchases from Custom Built Archery near Newark, about an hour from me. Yesterday we called in Clickers of Norwich for a couple of bits I wanted as we are in Suffolk and I am calling in again next week as I have a couple of arrow cases on order. 1 Quote Link to post

Do you think archery might overtake your air rifle enthusiasm, mate? Quote Link to post
philpot 5,171
Just now, shaaark said: Do you think archery might overtake your air rifle enthusiasm, mate? No as I used to be an active member of an archery club some years ago so nothing new, just a different type of bow and a reactivation of my old interest. I do more clay pigeon shooting than I do air rifle shooting anyway along with my carp fishing and sea fishing. As you can see my time is already split into different sections, archery is just another. Phil 2 Quote Link to post

philpot 5,171
We are all enjoying ourselves and getting well used to the bows. My grandson thinks he is stronger than he is and is always wanting to increase the power but what he does not know, I keep turning it down when I see that he is struggling with the extra power I have given him With the weather being so wet, in fact it is the worst winter for rain on record so we are sticking with the indoor range which is 18mts. Groups do vary I confess and I have come down to 12'' targets so the groups never look at good as they did on the 4' target. My wife has done some lovely groups getting down to around 30mm for 6 arrows which impressed the hell out of me but then it opens up a bit. Looking forward to warmer dry weather as we have our own 1000mm target boss so ideal for the garden and on one of my perms in fact I have a quarry which is stuffed with an assortment of trees and ivy which will make a great field archery place although if we miss the target, the arrow is gone in the ground ivy and I am not buying a metal detector but my pal has one so perhaps not a total loss. I don't know if I told you, I have taken off the hunting sight and fitted a decent target sight and upgraded the reap peep sight for an adjustable apperature version which we also had fitted to my wife's bow as well. I was not happy with my arrow rest so a couple of weeks ago I had a drop down rest installled which I find to be much better and finally fitted a stabiliser unit to allow both front stabiliser and also a side/rear short stabiliser rod. I am now very happy with the set up and it is working well for me plus the fact that the tweeks I have had done is helping me to improve. I have also reduced the power on my bow from 56lb down to 42lb which for this old fart is very comfortable so I may stick with it for now. Both my wife (Trish) and myself seem to be carrying more stuff to the range so we invested in two Avalon semi rigid bow / gear bags to make life much easier with everything fitting in the bags so we can't forget things when we get to the range. I went to the range a couple of weeks ago to watch a crossbow match which I found really interesting and confess it is on my list to have a go. The archery range/shop owner is really into crossbow competitions as he damaged his shoulder and can no longer shoot with recurve or compound bows and he has said I can have a session with his kit but I can't afford to fall in love with that as again UK price is between £1500 and £2200 for the crossbow plus a set of bolts/arrows. 1 Quote Link to post
