Just to let you all know went out hare shooting today with the old coursing club, had written permission from the farmer to catch rabbits and shoot hares (farmer was with us).

As the law states you cannot course a hare but you can use 2 dogs to flush up a hare and then shoot it, we had 2 lurchers off the lead as we walked up the field and after about 5oo yards the dogs flushed up a hare, the shot gun took aim but the the dogs got in the way and then the hare ran towards us so it was unsafe to shoot, the dogs stayed on the hare by now to far away to shoot and lost it in the hedge!

As the dogs came back a bit tired we decided to have different 2 dogs flushing up the hare, the dogs were off the leads sniffing about when a hare got up about 70 yards away unfortunately it was just out of range to shoot but the dogs gave chase to see if they could flush it back towards us for the gun but the hare had other ideas and instead they had a fantastic run for about 2-3 minutes in full view and eventually lost it in a hedge.

again they came back tired so we have to change to a different 2, as we walked they put up a hare and ran it well trying to flush it towards the gun, as the hare ran towards the gun it was unsafe to shoot as the dogs may have been hit, so we had to let them carry on, they turned it tighter and tighter and then accidentally caught it before we could shoot it, bad doggys!

next we walked a wheat field and found a hare in a form so we got the dogs to flush it out but the hare ran away from the gun with dogs in tow, they lost it in a meadow,

Finally we were walking across a stubble field and the 2 flushing dogs (another new pair cos the others were tired) were off leads sniffing about when a they flushed up a hare, unfortunately this happened when the gun man was having a call of nature so he could not shoot! anyway the dogs had a good run across 3 fields trying to get the hare to run back towards the gun but eventually losing it in a wood!

So all in all a bad day for hare shooting but a good day for the flushing dogs! The caught hare was taken home by the land owner for there own consumption as it staes within the law, everyone out had CLA membership and a Game licence, so as far as I am aware no hare coursing took place and no laws were broken!?? ;);):D

PS, did I mention that out shooting man just happens to be the worst shot in england! lol!

We are going hare shooting with the flushing dogs again next week so Il let you know how we get on

good hunting to you all! :good:

Well snatch..I was out lamping last nite mate....In a similar vein I too used my dog for flushing hares...Fortunately I am a crack shot and was able to deliver headshots with my .177 BSA Lightning fitted with a gas strut to hares in full flight...Luckily my dog was on hand and able to retrieve them dead to hand..Even the officer who stopped me complimented me on my shooting skills... :clapper:

Although I did refrain from showing him the shot vixen we had left in a dich...although it was the best shot of the nite :icon_redface:
