SportingShooter 0
I need some advice please guys. I am going to buy a .222 when my FAC comes through and my beat keeper has offered to sell me his, this is the same rifle i am used to using for all my fox and very long vermin work. it is a CZ 527 varmint which has a moderator, is obviously screw cut and has a 6x40 zero optik scope on it. it is about three years old and hasnt done a great deal of work maybe 150 rounds and the wood has no noticeable damage. how much do you think i should be offering him? Many thanks again ss06 Quote Link to post
Ratman2 2
Buy a copy of Gun Mart and see what the going price is. I would be prepared to pay over the odds for a gun I'd already used. Quote Link to post
woz 260
look on guntrader.co.uk i would of thought £250 ish...my mate has one and they are brilliant..its not been cleaned for ten years we use it atleast three times a week and its very accurate...... Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
Thanks guys, i reckon a new 527 is bout £450 new (gun mart feb.) and i know he paid £600 new for it and the moderator so i think i would be fair in offering him £500 for the lot. any thoughts, as you say ratman i mite pay over the odds for a rifle im used to. thanks ss06 Quote Link to post
woz 260
cz centre fires dont hold very much second hand value at all mate...i payed £400 for a winchester model 70 223 from west mid shooting ground and it had fired one shot..the blueing was still on the end of the firing pin, that came with 99 rounds.....the thing is if you want the rifle and plan to keep it who cares what you pay for it??? its what its worth to you...theres no getting away from it they are very good rifles..all of my rim fires are cz and i wouldnt have anything else.i target shoot and hunt with mine and i make people with very expensive kit look silly........... SportingShooter 0
thanks woz, you are quite right in what you say that the rifle is worth it if you like it. i didnt realise that the cz didnt hold their value. just have to see what happens when my FAC comes through thanks ss06 Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
Is this the same rifle you have used or simply one like you have used? CZ hold their value just about as well %wise as anyone else, they are good work horse guns in centrefire and their rimfire range offers excellent value for money. The setup your keeper has sounds fair, and with 150 rounds down it, it should be firing well now. The obvious question is ...So why is he selling it? So ..whats it worth...I'll guess you could get the gun brand new for £450. Don't know the cost of the scope and you have not mentioned what type of Moderator it has fitted. It also, obviously, has scope mounts, does it have a sling, slip, Bipod, is he giving away any ammo, etc etc If he paid £600 and you offer £500 I expect he will bite your hand off! Quote Link to post

I have reservations about a £70 scope (is it up to a .222) but I have greater reservations about a £50 moderator on a centrefire, even a .222. Take a look on Guntrader.co.uk to get some idea of prices but even for a "mate" offering £500 now for a package that cost £600 3 years ago does seem a lot! All the best..hope it all works out! Cheers Deker Quote Link to post

The Nikko Sterling range of scopes are very much underated in my opinion, and whilst many will say you need to spend £500+++ for a scope on a centrefire it is not true. (perhaps when you get up to a calibre that does shake your teeth) Any moderator at £50 (new) is not likely to be built well enough to handle the pressures that come out the end of the barrel of a centrefire (even a .222). The end result is likely to be not only expensive but potentially dangerous! Mind you, if someone can point me in the direction of a centrefire mod for £50 I would be very pleased to have a look, the ASE I bought about a year ago cost me £230. Cheers Quote Link to post
