Working terriers

Recommended Posts

i think some jib beacuse they always feel like the loser in situations, same as any dog, if it isnt given the right reward, why bother. (i think that ones that jib becuase they get fed up of getting hurt falls into this area!)

some its just a mental thing, old age etc, ive had dogs that have changed there working style all the way through their career.

I think Winkhound got it close. The more a terrier tries to dominate the worse end of the stick he might get. When he keeps getting pounded, the mind starts working on him.

i dont think this is true  .

some terrier's are born to work, and no matter what stick they get underground only the best will never let you down.

but getting the best is the hard bit.

worker to worker breading may produce worker's but when it comes to the nitty gritty only the

terriers that are the born workers will shine abouve the rest, and you may only get one or two of them in a lifetime

but them dogs will often set the stamp in your kennel.

the problem is that any young ones that you have in the following years, have got to meet the standards of the old ones ??

and yet in real tearms you know in your heart they aint going to be.

take them for what they are i say,the old and the young, nobody, ore anything is the same as the one from before ??????/??

I THINK ITS BECOME A TREND AMONG TERRIERMEN SINCE THE LOCATERS TO DESIRE HARD GAME DOGS.WHEN TERRIERS HAD TO SOUND THEY WHEREN T TAKING AS MUCH ABUSE.NOW THERES THIS DESIRE FOR HARDNESS.

TAKE ANY OTHER WORKING DOG HE S BEING TRAINED TO A HIGH STANDARD THEN EVENLY MATCHED AGAINST ITS OPPONENT,TERRIERS ARE WORKED HARD ,2 WEEKS LATER WITH TOO LITTLE EXCERCISE WORKED AGAIN OFTEN OVER MATCHED AND NOT PHYSICALLY UP TO STANDARD.OR WHAT ABOUT WORKED SORE ALL THE TIME,EVER GET IN A FIGHT 2 DAYS IN A ROW,FLIPPING NOT PLESENT.SOME WILL DO IT FOR A WHILE BUT WE ALL KNOW THE DOG LIKES THE HUNT WHEN IT BECOMES AN UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCE MOST WILL JACK.

READING THROUGH SOME EARLY EDRD AND HARCOME MADE A COMMENT I THOUGHT WAS GOOD ,A GOOD TERRIER MAN NOT ONLY KNOWS WHEN AND HOW TO WORK A DOG BUT WHEN NOT TO WORK IT.

Due to the nature of some of these dogs you have to be the discerning part of the parthership as they will take more and more and that's when you have to make the judgement call. It's a trait that's often abused by people who don't know how to read the dogs. Worker to worker is fine but you can sicken a dog

its very easy to sicken a dog as you say stabs, but to jib ?

and as you say there aint nothing wrong with worker to worker, thats where most of us get our terriers from, but

sometimes that aint enough to produce the ultimate terrier you'll ever likely to own.

in the real world only the terrier breaders can produce enougth pups a year, with all the kennel roam they

may have, and a lot of helping friends to help them along the way,and iwoul think these boys are certain to get

a good one out of say; twenty odd pups.

but enter them as best you can,and only the best come through as top class workers,

i wouldent like to put any odds on it but i would say you have about 15 -1 of producing the real deal.

most will work i would say if from the right line, with a bit of luck, but to get the best i would think you're lucky.

and like i say there is one that will stand out from the crowed, and we realy dont get them that offten

THERES A DIFFERENCE IN A DOG JUST JACKING AND A DOG BEING SICKENED?I HAVE A MATE WHO KNOWS HOW TO WORK HIS DOGS AND HAS AS GOOD A KENNEL OF DOGS AS THERE IS AROUND,HE HAD A DECENT DOG WHICH I WAS GOING TO USE OVER MY BITCH,THIS DOG WAS GOING WELL IN HIS 3 RD SEASON WELL BRED ,NOT WORKED SORE BUT GOT PLENTY TO TEST HIM.ONE DAY THE DOG JUST WALKED OUT AND LAY DOWN AT THE MOUTH OF THE HOLE?DOG WAS TAKEN TO THE VET ,NOTHING PHYSICALLY WRONG HE WAS LAYED OF AND TRIED AGAIN AND HE JUST DIDN T WANT IT.

THATS JACKING IN MY OPINION.

ANOTHER FELLA I KNOW HAS WRECKED EVERY DOG IN HIS KENNEL FOR THE LAST 10 YEARS,GOOD DOGS WITH POTENTIAL IN THE wrong HANDS WORKED SORE ,OVERMATCHED AND THEY ALL QUIT ,EXCEPT THE PURE SOUNDERS.THATS A BAD TERRIERMAN TO MY MIND NOTALL BAD DOGS.

ANOTHER FELLA I KNOW HAS HAD 3 QUIT BEFORE CHRISTMAS?NOT SURE OF THE CIRCUMSTANCES BUT I THINK HE S EITHER WORKING WITH THE WRONG DOGS OR HE S WORKING THE RIGHT DOGS WRONG.JMHO.

MY OWN EXPERIENCE OF A DOG NOT QUITING BUT BACKING OF WAS MY OLD DOG ABOUT 10 YEARS AGO IN 4 WEEKS HE HAD BEEN DUG TO 3 TIMES 13 1/2 HOURS ,3 1/2 HOURS AND 1 HOUR,NEXT WEEK WE HAD HIM IN A SHALLOW BURROW JUST A 8FT TUBE DOG WENT IN GOT HAMMERED BY A DOG AND A VIXEN AND BACKED OUT BARKING,SITTING ABOUT 4 FT OF THEM.DID HE JACK?THE DOG HAD BEEN BADLY HURT DURING ONE OF THE OTHER DIGS AND I DID NT KNOW TILL I TOOK HIM TO THE VET.3 MONTHS OF AND THE DOG WAS BACK TO NORMAL.

ANOTHER MATE HAD A REALLY GOOD DOG QUIT,HE PHONED THE FELLA WHO BRED HIM THE LAD SAID IT WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE RED BLOOD COUNT HE TOOK HIM TO THE VET GOT A INJECTION OF SOME ANTI BIOTIC AND IT SORTED THE DOG ,NEVER STOPPED AND IS STILL WORKING.

POINT BEING ITS NOT ALL BLACK AND WHITE ALL THE TIME.

quality reply there pip, i think if a dog fucks about once it should always be given a second chance as we dont know whats going on underground, all dogs have bad days.

going back to the first post, i think a worker is born, whether it has easy digs to start off or hard digs, i think the main quality needed is stubborness, pure and simple, a terrier should just want to stay with his quarry no matter what, i have a patterdale here, hes no world beater but i get the tackle with him, ive had a few good digs with him, on easy and hard quarry, hes been quite a reliable young dog(so far), hes f****d about on one dig before and kept coming away from his quarry then going back to it so i lifted him, i know some that would have put him down for it but i gave him another chance and hes worked well since JMHO...good posts fellas

THEY ALL HAVE THEIR BAD DAYS TOO,MY MATES DOG DONE THE SAME LAST WEEK,THIS DOG IS AS GOOD A DOG AS THERE IS AROUND,BUT SHE LOVES THE HUNT,SHE COMES INTO HER OWN WHEN THE STUFFS ON THE MOVE,SAME THING RUNNING ABOUT MATCH AND BACK TO THE SAME SPOT?I DON T KNOW BUT I RECKON THERE WAS 2 IN THE POT AND ONE WAS MOVING AND THE BITCH WAS FOLLOWING THE RUNNER.ANYWAY THEY GOT THE STUFF IN THE SAME SPOT THEY FIRSTY GOT THE MARK,SOMETIMES WHAT WE SEE AS MESING ABOUT IS WORKING,SOMETIMES ITS JUST MESSING ABOUT BUT YOU HAVE TO JUDGE THE AGE PAST DIGS IS THE BITCH IN SEASON OR DUE AND THE BURROW AND THE PHYSICAL CONDITION OF THE DOG.AGAIN OMO

:notworthy::notworthy::thumbs::thumbs: Absolutely spot on.Too many newbies in this game now, only looking to see the dog mixing it.Most of them wouldn't know a good dog,if it bit them on the arse.JMO

Nothing wrong with dog mixing it but you have to know when and where to use that dog .Every style of work has a place ,even those you can call out.I would have to say its 50% in the breeding and 50% in the handling of a terrier as to whether it jacks or not .The best breeding can be sickened and second rate dogs can be used to good effect ,by the right people .If a terrier that has otherwise had a good career messes me about then it gets a long lay off ,change of quarry and almost always resumes the work .Fitness plays a big part in what we expect our little tykes to do and taking them out for a dig at weekends only, then back in kennels is poor stockmanship in my eyes .Entering ,as covered in other threads ,can effect the length of a dogs career .

Whatever style of terrier you work ,treat them with respect and rememder they are not machines .

Good digging to all. :victory:
