Dog Breeding: The old way

I don't know where to put this so here's as good as anywhere! It was inspired by the stories i read about good working dogs being nicked. This is a true story!

 

In the depths of wild Welsh Wales back in the late 40's there was a shortage of good quality working gundogs, because none of the local roughshooters could afford to buy one. They used a mottley crew of mongrels of different sorts. However there was one bloke, the squires gamekeeper who did have a good working labrador dog, he was given one as part of his job.

The gamekeeper was a creature of habit, he worked hard 6 days a week, had a few pints on a Saturday and went to Chapel on Sunday morning.

Apparently his black labrador dog had Satruday nights most of us could dream of, as every single bitch on heat (if all fell correctly) was left in kennel for a few hours of a Saturday evenng, providing an improvement in the genes of working dogs in the valley. Gamekeeper knew nothing of this for 7 years, until he was ill one Saturday evening and did not go to the pub and...well you can guess the rest.

Anybody else heard similar stories???

I know a bloke who is getting on a bit now but he told me him and a mate used to take their lurchers on to some land,but used to call at a keepers house while he was in the pub and take his spaniels out to work the reed beds for the hares,would of liked to have seen the keepers face when he came back.
