If you get past the dogs.....

Recommended Posts

I've got a couple of  5 month Springer pups I'm doing a bit of basic training with. A friend of mine is ill, so I'm giving them some socialisation and confidence building. They've been kennelled from day one and know nothing. They are pathetically submissive.

They both get crazily excited when visitors come and literally piss themselves.  'Glee pee' I think its called.Trust my evil minded Mrs to use them as weapons against visiting politicians looking for votes. Soon as she knows they are in the area she let's them out to greet our beloved political masters. The result is they end up with piss over their shoes and the bottom of their trousers. Funny thing is most will back off out the gate but you get the odd one who will continue to the door. Big mistake. The last one ended up hurrying out the gate pursued by 'she who must be obeyed' shouting :" f****n food banks!", "f****n third world services and roads"," picking on the poor.", f****n bent covid contracts". Its surprising how fast a fat fella can move when he has to.

I took two similar young springers in as police search dogs. They hadn't had much if any socialisation and had bee  penned with their parents and elder half brother. The owner, a shooting man, had split from his wife and had no time to train them. They peed every time anyone got near them and were scared of their own shadows. I took one home and gave the other to a handler who had a springer gun dog as well as his  working GSD  which was the same pack as I had. Splitting them up was the first part of their rehabilitation. When taking Daisy for a walk initially she clung to my leg. It was like having a diver's boot on. Over time she became more confident and both sucessfully completed their training and worked well.

Just take it easy and let them grow up slowly. Give them a bit of independance whilst reassuring them, and let them explore the wider world at their own pace.

Thanks for that. Springers have changed a lot in temperament due to selective breeding I guess. The first springer I had 50 odd years back was a real hard bugger. Didn't care about anything except flushing and then coursing game.?. All the springers I have  come across in recent years have been a dream.....more interested in pleasing the trainer than than themselves. Cockers are still the same though. Evil little clowns interested only in themselves. Always challenging, amusing and infuriating. ?

What dogs do you keep over in Frogland? Any of the native breeds any good?

From memory the two dogs I brought in were from Badgercourt and Rytex lines if that means anything to you. The only dog I brought in that didn't make the grade was Ruby who I ended up paying the rescue centre ninety quid for and keeping for myself. She as a basket case physically and emotionally. It took us over 18 months to straighten her out and she ended up as a good beating / hide shooting dog and acted as a matriarch mentor for a lot of young police dogs.

Our current dog is another basket case from the local dog's home. After three years she is still work in progress.

I don't know anything about local breeds except that none of them have a recall.
