Ever put trail cams on your traps ?

Recommended Posts

Been playing around with the rats in the shed again and got curious as to what was going on. The bait looked untouched for the last few days the camera was on and I was thinking I had taken care of them or try where just scared if the trap but the camera told a different story. Gotta say these little $28 cams are a real blessing when it come to learning if you stuff really works the way you think.  Ends up rats, chipmunks, and even birds have regularly been eating on the bait climbing in and out of the box, just not triggering the trap

Have also learned a lot doing this with hogs ,fox coyotes, beaver and even turtles. Lots of things I've been told have end up being false after reviewing a a dozen or so animals on camera.

I've seen lots on youtube. Some showed up really poor attempts of making a decent set. Gaps allowing target species to get at bait without even touching the trap. Others showing animals refusing to enter box's for one reason or the other. Some certainly shy away from bodygrip triggers, some plow on in without hesitation.

I think the important thing to take from seeing how animals behave around your sets, is to try and avoid as many refusals as possible. Most of us are probably pleased with our catch ratio. If we knew how many refusals and missed chances we were having, we might think twice about how well our sets are working.
