I read about this once. They have a name for it and it's considered, by those who do it, quite a sport. For those who know themselves to be victims, it's considered an absolute outrage.

But, to the best of my own, extremely limited, understanding; Are the 'Hackers' (for want of the correct term) not 'just' stealing the others mans Bandwidth? Shall we liken it to hitching ye motor to the guy in front? You're thus using his fuel to drag you along in his wake. I Think that's what it's all about anyway.

I don't believe they can actually 'see' your computer or in any way influence what goes on with it. Only that, I suppose, if ye get enough of them bleeding you, ye may notice a diminished signal strength of ye own?

I'm on Vodafone wireless myself here. Only I'm so far from anywhere that it'd take a very desperate man to sit out there in the bog, sucking my signal! Better off going into town and paying a few Euro to sit in the warm and comfortable Internet Cafe there!

But, as more directly regards ye own more direct question? What's to worry about? If ye not out to do it, no reason to care. If ye think it may be done to you? Seems there isn't much to be done about it anyway! Cest la vie.

Gamedogs- If I understand what you are asking correctly, I think you need to go into your modem and either turn off or encrypt your wireless signal. Thats the bit where you type http://192.168. and so on into your internet browser. If you think someone is getting onto your modem this way, do something about it- they could f@@k up your computer good and proper.

If you are struggling to sort this out, collar yourself a geek to do it for you- it will only take an enthusiast a few minutes and you might find yourself offline without knowing why if you press the wrong buttons...

You can pick up a wireless transmission at the sort of distances you are talking about, but you would almost certainly need an outdoor transmission aerial to do it.

That gave me a sunday night tickle.... ....though i know how exactly how you feel with regards to images downloading on a slow connection, when i was on dial up they took forever, been on broadband a while now, and pics are down fast.

Good luck in the Bog
