There are 2 slotted adjusters inside the box i think they adjust depth signal.

FF

Your right FF there are two adjustable pots that can be tweaked, But if he's only getting 3' then I recon the resisting horse shoe inside the on / off dept switch is is fractured mate.

Does it have to be replaced or can I solder it together again to make a connection

No mate there's a what I think is a resisting carbon horse shoe  shaped piece I've repaired a couple like that by replacing the switch. If you take the small screw out of the centre of the on/off switch, remove the wheel. Then remove the circuit board, now under where the wheel is a orange or white plastic washer carefully remove that, you should now see a copper y shaped brush running on what looks like carbon. Have a look with a magnifying glass see if you can see a hair line crack in the carbon. If you can't you could try cleaning the carbon very carefully with a cotton bud and a small amount of mentholated spirt.

If you go to the calibrating thread I posted how to remove and replace switch.

I would say about 9 time out of 10 with the MK1 it's the on/off depth switch.
