Drone Strike 2

Recommended Posts

Another chap i control foxes for is in the same game shooting syndicate as me. He has two other shoots one consisting of three farms adjacent to each other the other is four farms. Well we went for our monthly look around on the three farm one last night. This shoot has a total area of approximately fifteen hundred acres which is all accesable  by 4x4 which ninety eight percent of my shooting is. Two of the farmers had said they had seen foxes and one of them wasn't fazed by human contact at all, infact it stood close by and watched the farmer.

We took up position on the top of a hill over looking a big area with woods to our left and right sides. There was a lot of sheep and cattle in this field which never makes things easy. The foxpro was put out at fifty yards and calling began, pheasant distress, jackrabbit distress and finally fox rally. A good twenty minutes had gone by without seeing anything so it was decided to move on. I put the head lights on the truck and drove off the field onto the track and headed downhill towards the farm. about two hundred and fifty yards the headlights picked something up running right to left in front of us. I stopped immediately and got out with the thermal spotter, there it was about sixty yards away just stood looking at us. Question is would it stay long enough to get a shot. I went to the back of the truck and got my rifle out slipped the mag in and chambered a round whilst simultaneously switching on the Drone and Dragonfly. After pulling down the bipod legs and walking to the bonnet i looked where i had last seen it. Still there! watching us, a dull thud from the 204 and his curiousity   was at an end. A lucky encounter for us but not for him.

We moved on to another of the trio of farms but after spending an hour calling in various locations decided once again to move on. This was our last port of call for the night. Again we were parked up near the top of a hill just behind a farm building overlooking three fields which are bordered by a wood. Again there where sheep and cattle in the field and this lot are a real giddy bunch. Ten minutes of calling and my mate says "what's that coming up the hill". I picked up the unmistakeable shape and gait of a vulpine a good four hundred yards out. As a reflex action the Drone and Dragonfly where switched on in readiness. However the antics of the afforementioned cattle really didn't help and the fox made to the wood in front of us. Here it sat, curious of the call but never going to commit because of the bullocks. The classic stand off, and to make it worse it was partially obscured by a rise in the ground in front of it. This fox had come to the pheasant distress call but i decided to gamble on a different call to try and get it to move to give me a better shot. Fox rally did the trick and the fox moved forwards a few yards which presented a shot i was more than comfortable with. Trigger set, reticule on the target, exhale and squeeze, i saw her go down instantly and then the noise that came back a split second later told me the shot was good. After walking down to retrieve her i ranged it back to the truck out of curiosity two hundred and forty seven yards. So ended another successful outing, lets see what tonight brings.
