Buying ammo in Ireland?

Recommended Posts

I'm going to see my daughter and grandson next month in the Republic of Ireland, we're traveling through Northern Ireland (Belfast). As I live on an island we only have really one RFD and normally stock up on ammo while mainlanding. We get back Sunday, so my next goto in Inverness is closed. Could I get ammo on my way back in Ireland or Northern Ireland on a scottish fac?

Should add I'm not traveling with any firearm and only buying 17,22 an 308

Interesting one. I would have thought that you could buy. It's not like your going on a plane.  A good reason to reload your own. It can be difficult to get the stock's I need down here in the southeast  let alone in outer Mongolia where you reside.  I buy stock in when it is available then when that bullet or powder ain't available it don't affect me as much.

Don't see many rimfire loading kits, I have seen 22 ones but never a 17. Strange the ferry here doesn't mind you bringing live ammo over but doesn't like powder and they can refuse boarding so not worth the hassle that way, and for the amount of 308 I go through hardly worth me getting kitted out to load my own. Cheers.

My fault. I thought you were referring to 17 rem 22cf, 22cf and 308. It didn't even cross my mind about rimfire. I did once see some sort of attempt to reload 22lr. The priming was done by grinding up red match heads in water to make a paste primer.  It did work but variable ignition caused inaccuracy.  It might have worked at close range. Cant remember what they used as bullets. Maybe air gun pellets, ??  I'll have to go find it.

Certainly attempts have been made to reload .22lr, but not sure they are very consistent/effective, and not sure you can get these kits in UK.

Anyway, what happened about ammo in Ireland?

interesting subject but no mention of what sort of powder, how much  and how the case is reprimed and what with.  sods luck that the existing strike dent would line up when fired causing no ignition.

from the product information   I sort of get the feeling  that this is kind of designed to be a sort of last resort out in the wilderness sort of thing.  dont forget to check the contents in your "bug out bag "  when the guberment and the zombies come calling. The main problem is that there ain't any wilderness down here in Kent to bug out to.

Got an email back from a shop in Ireland recently

"Hi there again,

Unfortunately we would not be able to supply you.  Only valid Irish licence holders can buy ammunition from us.  However call into the shop and we can see if we can help you out."

So that clears that up and scuppers my plans ? I'm pretty sure the emphasis on "see if we can help you out" means try and sell me goods that don't need a license, not come to some arrangement on ammunition ?

BTW, I would interpret that email differently to you!

What does that mean?  Does that mean that you would buy a cap from the shop and get x boxes of lead thrown in free.? ( Hello mr shopkeeper,  I'd like a new cap in 500 x 17 size please  Do you follow ? ).

Yes, only a valid Rep of Ire licence are able to buy ammo in Ireland. Remember it is a different country to yours. It would be like driving to spain and trying to buy ammo there. If you are passing through Enniskillen, then there is a place called home, field and stream. You could contact them and ask.

Yeah I get that, I'll probably get better luck in Belfast seen as that's English. Son in laws mate has an Irish ticket too so says if I'm stuck he'll get them on his for me n Bollox te em ? spent a lot of time in Ireland, four of my kids were born there at the Coombe in Dublin, out in the country now though, I don't have to do crowds visiting grandkids which is nice
