North Armagh Working Terrier Dog Show and Race Day ( Breandan Colemans Show ) Sunday 4th June 17

Situated on the banks of Lough Neagh, beside Oxford Island National Nature Reserve, beautiful Kinnego Embankment was the venue for the North Armagh Dog Show and Raceday Sunday 4th June 17.

As we drove along the country roads, between the green hedges, it was not long to a field full of cars, vans and trailers came into view. With the echo of barking dogs wafting over the rippling waters of Lough Neagh, Mrs Sat Nav verified in her dolcet tones, we had reached our destination.

As the North Armagh Working Terrier Dog show and Race day is widely acclaimed being one of the top shows of the year, again this year it certainly lived up to its name. This show always brings a magical atmosphere with it.

From 10.00am on Sunday morning the crowds rolled up in force, with dogs and family in tow. This new show ground was superb with a good long Racing Track, views to die for, and loads of room in the show rings. Ringside parking was laid on, with Toilet facilities, and a burger van on site to keep hunger at bay.

A bouncy castle had been erected on site, along with an Ice cream van for the wee people. There was an Outdoor clothing stand, and Trevor and Denise Cahill had their dog lead stand in full swing. Nothing left to chance at this show, something for everybody.

The weather was not kind with torrential rain pouring down at times. But the rain did not dampen the spirits of the showing and racers on the day. This show is always a great family day out with lots of fun and frolics, and we were not disappointed this year either.

It was nice to see the usual show goers back at the show this year, and quite a few new faces as well in the ring, showing off their Whippets, Terriers, Lurchers and Strong Dogs , and maybe take home a nice trophy or a bag of meal at the end of the day. Again these good canine people travelled from North and South of the border, and as faraway as England and Wales.

At 12noon the show kicked off with the ever popular digging competition. As these brave men began to dig, the wolf whistle from the women folk took over, and the fun began. The sight of all that bare flesh, certainly was a real treat for an old lady. As the count down began, very soon the winners was declared, and definitely all very well earned.

Overall Winners were:

Breandan Coleman

Darren Patts

Congratulations to Breandan and Darren and well done.

The other 3 sets of diggers taking Part were:

Pat Mc Colgan

Gerald Melaugh

Gregg Murphy

Seamus Cairns

Harry Roche

Ken Wilson

Congratulations, you are all winners in my eyes.

Next it was on to Darren Moore and Graham Fyffes Ferrett showing and Racing. Although I am afraid of these small animals, they generate so much excitement for young and old around the ring. I really love this part of the show.

Overall Ferrett Show Champion went to:

1/ Kathy Maxwell with Polo

2/ Abi Fyffe with Snowy

3/ Ryan Hill with Jack

Overall Ferrett Racing Champion went to:

1/ Malachy Mc Fall with Uzian Albert

2/ Chontelle Mc Meekin with Susanne

A big congratulations to all the worthy winners, and many thanks to Graham Fyffe and Darren Moore for organizing and running a very efficient Ferrett show, and well done.

Next in line was the childrens handling class. These little people are very important people to country sports show rings and race courses. Long after we have gone out of the ring and the field, these little people will be carrying on our Country Sports traditions in another tomorrow, and another generation.

Well done to all involved.

The Racing responsibilities on the day was carried out by Jed Donagh/Shane Ennis and Jennifer Gately. What a brilliant team and excellent team work. Well done Jed.

And Finally, Finally, this top of the range show would not been possible without a good man at the helm, helped by an ever willing partner.

Breandan Coleman and Emma Hedley and your excellent back up team, you pulled out all the stops and turned the day into a memorable family dog show, and a good Country Sporting day out. It was evident a lot of hard work and sleepless nights went on behind the scenes to make this Dog show so successful. Thank you for a most enjoyable day out.

It must be noted that Breandan is giving the proceeds of the Raffle at his show this year to the Charity“Care in Crisis“.

Margaret Mc Stay

Many thanks Mal

A Tribute to the late John Shaw who passed away  last Thursday 6th November 25

      I Am Free
Do not grieve for me now my  friends and family, I am free
I am following the path God Laid for me
I took his hand when I heard him call
I turned my back and left it all
I could not stay another day
To Love, to live, to hunt, to show my treasured Whippets, or play.
I found a peace at close of day.
Be not burdened with the times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow
Perhaps my time seemed all to brief
Do not lengthen it now with undue grief
Lift up your hearts my friends and share with me
      God wanted me now,
      He set me free.
John, we will love you forever and you will be sadly missed by your loving family and all your Country Sporting Fraternity and in the show ring.
May the Angels above give you the best seat in Heaven and may your gentle soul rest in peace.
      For Country Sports Fraternity
