theobenmike 0
Just wandering if anybody has caught there own magpie call bird. I'm talking of the first one in your empty larsen trap using mirrors, decoys and dead rabbits etc. If so how the feck did you do it I normally get one dropped off by a mate who is a keeper but not till early spring time. Before I got one I tried a dead rabbit cut open, eggs in and around the trap with an old nest thrown in the bottom, and a mirror at the bottom of the traping compartments. But no luck When I got a call bird in the trap within an hour two maggies were caught . But before that weeks of baiting with rabbits and so on. So is there an easy way to catch your first maggie without a call bird Quote Link to post
Guest Ditch_Shitter
Caught mine with the standard bit of hay and couple of eggs, mate. Takes a while, sure. But I got him. Quote Link to post
john b 38
And me. However I have found it works best in spring / summer and if there is a similar 'nest' outside as well, up against the cage. Also a few cubes of spread scattered around as an inital attractor There's another thread about this from before http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...showtopic=26158 Quote Link to post
Guest little_lloyd
It took me a night to catch my first call bird,, i was waking on the edge of the wood and placed my larson baited with eggs to create a fake nest, the next morning i had two wating for me!! I dont use my larsons untill the spring right down in to late summer/ autum Quote Link to post
Rolfe 2
Same as all the others mate............i only ever make a dummy nest in the cage to catch a call bird. always works for me.........breaking a few eggs and leaving the shells helps a bit....looks like the nest has already been robbed by another bird. Good Luck Rolfe Quote Link to post
red dog 3
i caught one today but i had a jackdaw as a call bird or is that cheating i use eggs with a hole like another bird has been there already, i'll swap you that magpie for half a dozen eggs if you like mate yis. theobenmike 0
Cheers for the input lads. I will try it with a nest and eggs and broken shells (and a bit of patience). I have made a nest out of dead grass moulded into a circle as I don't have any hay or straw but it should do the trick I thought I'd cured the maggie situation earlier on but it would seem otherwise. I can get another call bird in early spring time, as I did earlier this year, but there are three magies doing the rounds all of a sudden. I'll let you know how I get on with it, Mike. theobenmike 0
What about a call Jay  I caught one today using eggs and a nest. Are they any use as call birds for maggies or other jay's or is it best to just shoot it and keep trying for a maggie? Mike Quote Link to post
Major Badger 2
What about a call Jay  I caught one today using eggs and a nest. Are they any use as call birds for maggies or other jay's or is it best to just shoot it and keep trying for a maggie? Mike I'd give it a go. Ive caught crows, a jay, jackdaws using a magpie so I think it would porbably work. Even if it just gives the magpies a bit of confidence. Worth a go! Good luck Edited December 14, 2007 by sponser Quote Link to post
