Guest Ditch_Shitter
Beags; As I intimated on ye other thread mate; Just get a couple of handfulls of hay and make a rough little ring of it. Put a couple of hens eggs in it and strew a wisp or two over them, as if some bird has made a token effort at hiding them. (I don't like to make things too obvious to the 'pies). Then just stay clear of the trap till ye have one. That could happen in hours. May take weeks. But one'll come along Quote Link to post
beagles 0
cheers ditch someone said if i want to catch crows use a dead rabbit :thumbs-up: Quote Link to post
Guest Ditch_Shitter
Eggs for magpies. Anything with eyes for crows, mate. Rabbit would be fine for a carrion crow, only make sure it's eyes are wide open and at least one is well exposed and showing Thing is; Hooded crows, which is all I get here and of which there's only the one ~ if he's still alive ~ in Wales. Anglesey, to be exact. Lived out on some headland. Anyway, Hoodies are said to like to land on something off the ground. Immaterial to you, I know. Just opening up the discussion. But I suppose the top of a Larsen would cover it? Carrion crows, in my experiance, prefer to land nearby and walk over to and around their target. I therefore wonder if a Larsen is best suited to them? I'm sure someone here will say they've taken carrion's in a Larsen. But I'd ask how consistantly? Larsen's probably the finest magpie trap there is. I can't help wondering if a ground based, horizontal Funnel Trap wouldn't do better at the Joe's? Are ye innundated with Joe Crow then? Not enough Pies to keep ye busy? Quote Link to post
proper job 1
Top or side entry for magpies, side/floor entry for the crows . Edited June 13, 2007 by proper job Quote Link to post
john b 38
As ditchy said - this works for me next morning Quote Link to post
john b 38
A quick footnote to this. My larsen has been on loan for a week baited as described above. (Well more or less like it but not as good. ) There we no takers at all, all week. So this afternoon we threw a few handfulls of while bread cubes around and added another 'nest' outside the trap up against it. Had two by the time it got dark. Quote Link to post
Guest little_lloyd
Well since i lost my call bird I moved my larson last night to a new location where i counted SIX yesterday, baited it with a fake nest and woke uo this moring and went over and checked it to find 2 adult magpies humanly dispatched one and saved the other as a call bird. Set the trap again went of for a mooch and managed to shoot a rabbit Went back to the larson 15/20 minitutes alter an another one had bitten the dust Puts a smile on me face knowing ive taken 12 of them in the past 2 weeks. (few days without trap set) And i hope to see more tommorow moring Quote Link to post
